PUBLISHERS' DEPARTMENT.

THE publishers of THE PACIFIC EDUCATIONAL JOURNAL take pleasure in announcing that J. B. McChesney, Principal of the Oakland High School, will hereafter occupy the editorial chair. We are particularly pleased in being able to make this statement, because we believe we now see our way clear to make the JOURNAL what it should be—an expression of the present condition of education in California and of the aims and ambition of those who are endeavoring to promote it. Mr. McChesney has been prom inently connected with the public schools of our State for the last thirty years, and has always been recognized as one of our most progressive teachers. His long experience in the school room eminently fits him to take that broad view of educational questions which is so desirable in an editor of a school journal. The publishers will spare no pains to make such improvements from time to time as the interests of teachers and school officers may require, and they expect that encouragement and patronage which an intelligent constituency is always ready to give.

AFTER the pages containing the Official Department had gone to press, we received several articles from the State Superintendent, which should have appeared under that head. They will appear in our next number. One, of considerable importance, relates to Cook's pamphlet on Entomology. The State Superintendent states that none of these pamphlets are now nor have been in his possession for free distribution.

SAMUEL CARSON & Co. have now in press and will issue next month a teachers' manual entitled Common School English. It will be neatly printed, bound in cloth, and illus trated with wood cuts. James G. Kennedy, head inspecting teacher of the San Fran cisco schools, and Fred H. Hackett are the authors. The price of the book will be only fifty cents, and we predict for it a cordial reception.

THE editorial and business office will hereafter be located at 612 Clay street, between Montgomery and Kearny. A cordial invitation is extended to teachers, school officers and the friends of education to call. We shall be particularly pleased to see our friends from the interior, and to extend to them any courtesies in our power.

WE are desirous of securing agents to canvass for THE PACIFIC EDUCATIONAL JOURNAL in every county of the State. To good agents liberal terms will be given. Please write to the manager, stating what territory you wish and how much time you can devote to the work. References required.

MRS. MAY L. CHENEY, Manager of the Pacific Coast Bureau of Education, will have an office in our editorial and publishing rooms, at 612 Clay street. We take pleasure in commending Mrs. Cheney to the favorable consideration of teachers and school officers.

THE publishers of THE PACIFIC EDUCATIONAL JOURNAL propose to make a specialty of noticing such books and magazines as have a general bearing on educational subjects. We desire to keep our readers informed of the best and latest thought on whatever would tend to elevate the teacher.

FIVE or more subscriptions to the JOURNAL, with the money, at one dollar and a half

each. Now is the time to subscribe.

ERRATUM.-In the first article of the Editorial Department, third line, for "enavity" read "suavity."
