WALLABOUT MARKET.

The Wallabout Market was established in 1884 by the city government of Brooklyn, which, on February 13 of that year, leased as tenant at will from the national government, 422,525 square feet of swamp land adjoining the Naval Hospital, for the market site. The swamp land, which seemed most unpromising at first, both from its condition and position, was soon filled in with ashes and like material; streets were laid out; gas, sewers, water mains, hydrants and electric lights were put in; a market square of 104,000 square feet was made, and within a very short time after the completion of these improvements, business began with a rush, and the 114 lots into which the market had been divided were rented at figures which brought in a tidy sum to the city treasury. Of late years the business of the market has far exceeded its accommodations, and Congress has been unsuccessfully appealed to from session to session to sell the present market site to the city, as well as the remaining waste lands on the other side of Washington av. On July 2, 1890, however, a bill authorizing the sale of the whole property to the city of Brooklyn was passed by Congress, and the Secretary of the Navy was instructed to have a survey made for the purpose of ascertaining its extent and value. Messrs. Andrew J. Perry, Hassan H. Wheeler and Joseph Benjamin were appointed to do the work, and on November 25 made a report to the Secretary of the Navy and Mayor Alfred C. Chapin that the total extent of the land was 17 acres, and its value $700,000. Following are the statistics of

The Long Island Tunnel. The proposed tunnel under the East River will begin at Eleventh avenue and Forty-second street, New York, will run to Forty-second street to the East River, and under the river to a terminus about 500 feet from the Long Island City Court House. The tracks will come to the surface at both termini, and at Eleventh avenue they will connect with the New York Central freight tracks, with the West Shore ferry and with the proposed North River bridge, if that is ever built. It will be connected with all the elevated railroads in New York and with the Grand Central Depot by elevators. Its trains will run on a standard gauge double track, probably with electricity as a motive power. The Board of Directors includes: James J. Phelan, Charles H. Adams, M. W. Niven, John Bogart, A. D. Palmer, Charles C. Leary, William W. Crider, Henry T. Slaven, Henry A. Kearney and Theodore L. Rutter.

Indians on Long Island.

At the time Long Island was discovered by the English it was occupied by thirteen tribes or families of Indians. These all possessed the same general characteristics. They belonged to the great Algonquin nation, and are supposed to have been a part of the Lenni-Lenape or Delaware sub-division of that nation. The so-called tribes occupied rude villages on the shores of the Island, some of the tribes numbering a few score individuals, and others perhaps a few hundred.
