MUSICAL SOCIETIES OF BROOKLYN-Continued.

greatest prosperity. The Philharmonic Chorus was organized in October, 1880, under the supervision of Mr. Thomas, and continued for six years. The chorus masters were Augustin Cortada and Paul Tidden. The chorus numbered 400 to 600, and took a prominent part in the great May festival in the Seventh Regiment Armory, New York, in 1882. The chorus produced Handel's Messiah, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Gounod's The Redemption and Mors et Vita, Mozart's Requiem, Bach's Christmas Oratorio, Dvorak's Spectre's Bride and Rubinstein's Paradise Lost, beside a number of minor works. The chorus was disbanded in 1886, because of the great expense in maintaining it. The soloists comprised nearly every one of eminence who came to this country. The present officers of the Society are Henry K. Sheldon, President; L. S. Burnham, First VicePresident; C. T. Christensen, Second Vice-President; B. T. Frothingham, Secretary; William R. Bunker, Treasurer, and Theodore Thomas, Musical Director.

SAENGERBUND-This society was formed from those left of the Liederkranz and Thalia, after President Lincoln issued his first call for troops. Its first meeting was on July 9, 1862, and its first President, Julius Reinsch. Its chief event of note has been the erection of a club house at the corner of Smith and Schermerhorn streets. Carl B. Auerbach, President, 1877-79, was its most ardent promoter. In 1876 he prepared the plans and $20.000 were raised, but it was not until January, 1884, that a new home was secured. Burnham's old gymnasium was purchased and remodeled, at a cost of $70,000. The ladies' organization is an important part. The Saengerbund's officers are: Charles G. Auerbach, Presiident; Ferdinand Roth and A. N. Becker, VicePresidents; Jacob Michaelis, Corresponding Secretary; Charles Meinel, Recording Secretary; Charles W. Mühlhausen, Treasurer. There are 215 passive members and a chorus of sixty, led by William Groeschel.

SCHWABISCHER SAENGERBUND was formed in 1872, and now numbers 190 members, of whom 60 are active. The meeting place is at Union Saengerbund Hall, corner Ewen and Meserole streets. President, Carl Eichman; E. F. Kunzelmann, Sec.; August Bischoff, Musical Director.

SOCIAL QUARTET CLUB was started by twenty men twenty-two years ago, in Eckford Hall, Eckford and Calyer streets. It is there to-day, with a passive membership of 100 and an active of 65. Its officers are: President, Leopold Hartner; Vice-President, Albert Oestheimer; Treasurer, John Gehring; Corresponding Secretary, John Hanhauer; Financial Secretary, John Munz; Librarian, William Zerte.

UNITED SINGERS OF BROOKLYN-A union of the German singing societies of the city. There are nearly thirty societies now in the United Singers, namely the Arion, Arion Quartette Club, Boss Baker Singing Society, Brooklyn Maennerchor, Brooklyn Quartette Club, Brooklyn Saengerbund, Caecelia, Concordia Maennerchor, Concordia Quartette, Deutscher Liederkranz, Friedrich Glueck Quartette Club, Haydn Maennerchor, Hermannsöhne Maennerchor, йessicher Saengerbund, Norddeutsche Harmonie, Schneider Harmonie,Schwäbischer Saengerbund, Social Quartette Club, Williamsburgh Saengerbund, Zöllner Maennerchor, Arndt Maennerchor, Bach Quartette Club, Deutscher Sängerlüst, Frank Harth Quartette Club, Harmonie and Beethoven Maennerchor. The membership is thirteen hundred, with an active chorus of six hundred. Of these, four hundred, or the required two-thirds, are present at the national fests. Twenty societies are usually represented. The present officers are: President, William D. Lohmann; Vice-Presidents, Simon K. Sänger and Charles T. Vorgang; Secretary, Berhard Klein; Financial Secretary, Jacob J. Wolf; Treasurer, Paul Walde; Librarian, Hermann Friedlander; Honorary President, Hermann B. Scharmann. Gunther Kiesenweiler is musical director.

WILLIAMSBURGH SAENGERBUND-This singing society was organized in January, 1855. It numbers 175 members, of whom 75 are active. The meeting place is Goetzman's Hall, Ewen street. President, Charles Vorgang.

ZOELLNER MAENNERCHOR was founded in 1863, and at the present time numbers about three hundred members, both singing and associate. It recently purchased for a club house Warner In stitute, Broadway and Reid av .; Pres. M. Mayer.

The Ballot Reform Law.

The new ballot reform law, which went into effect in New York State in 1890, is generally admitted to give perfect satisfaction. Its operations at the last election were so successful as to warrant the conclusion that its provisions are well understood by the voters; that whatever friction may have arisen, will diminish as the system becomes more familiar; and finally, that it will be a permanent statute in this State. The principal things to remember are these: First, That voters must register as they have always done. Second, That on going to the polls on election day, the voter must give his name to the poll clerks and then to the registry clerks, who see if he is registered. Then the ballot clerks will give him his ballots. Third, Having received the ballots, the voter goes to a booth, where he prepares them by folding them first lengthwise, and then crosswise, all the ballots to be folded in precisely the same manner. Fourth, Coming out of the booth, the voter gives the ballot he intends to vote to the inspector, calling out his name at the same time. The inspector who' receives the accepted ballot tears off the stub in plain sight of the voter and deposits the ballot in the box, filing the stub. Fifth, The stubs of the discarded ballots are torn off and filed on a different file from that on which the accepted ballot stubs are placed. They go into a separate box. As each ballot is precisely alike in color, shape, size and indorsement, it is presumed that there is no way to tell what tickets the voter has accepted.

The Presidential Succession. The main object of the law regulating the presidential succession is to keep the presidency within the control of the party intrusted with the administration of the government. It is argued that it would be manifestly unfair to throw the selection of the President into the hands of Congress, when the people had already determined at the polls the party they desired to serve them. Assuming that a Democratic President has been elected, it is urged that it would be a palpable evasion of the popular will, if Congress, by the chance of politics, were enabled to choose a Republican successor-an argument which the leading men of both political organizations are perfectly willing to accept. Under the presidential succession law the presidency, in the event of the death of the incumbent of that office, would descend first to the Vice President, as a matter of course, and then to members of the cabinet in the following order: Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of War, Postmaster General, Attorney General, Secretary of the Navy, Secretary of the Interior. Act approved, 1886.
