EXHIBIT NO. 16-Continued

Hidden counter-revolutionaries are afraid of her, taking her as a thorn in the flesh. They try to frame her up, but her consistent loyality to the Party still wins Party trust.. The matter is eventually thrashed out under correct action of the Party and those counter-revolutionaries who try to frame her up end in an ignominous defeat. The image of this woman engineer gives me a tremendous stimulation. I am determined to emulate her heroic example and sweep away affections for counter-revolutionaries like garbage.

Since I drow a demarcation line against counter-revolutionaries, the sufferings, pessimism and passivity were gone, and I felt relieved and happy. I did my work and joined the "suppress counter-revolution" struggle in a high spirit. I felt I wes no longer a weak person.

There is little or no essential difference between the Catholic and Protestant churches. Both are exploited by imperialists for the furtherance of their own ends.--SCMP Ed.

A reader of Canton, Yang T'ing, says in his letter:

"In the 'Evening Get-Together' column on October 20, reference is made to Christian priests. In my opinion, there are no priests in the Christian [Protestant] churches, because they belong only to the Catholic 'clergy.' A Christian counterpart is known as pastor. Has an error been made in the article which uses this designation? What after all are the essential differences between Catholic and Christian churches?".

Catholics form one of the divisions of the Christian church in a broad sense. The Christian Church in the same sense comprises followers of the Roman Catholic Church and the Reformed Churches--the two major divisions of Christendom. The Christian churches began to draw followers during the 1st and 2nd centuries among peoples of different nations under the rule of the Roman Empire. Religious divisions within the Christian churches occurred later, because the ruling classes sought to cope with the requirements of different periods, notably the Reformation before and after the 16th Century. This religious movement stemmed from the need to conform to the interests of the emerging bourgeoisie in Europe.

As a result of the Reformation and subsequent break with the feudal rule of the Vatican of the Roman Church, the Reformed Churches came into being. In China followers of these new religious groups are commonly known as Protestants, while those of the old Roman Church as Catholics. In a broad sense they are in fact all Christians. Therefore, in the article, "Random Talks about Things in General Happening in the World, it is quite all right to refer to Catholic priests "Christian priests."

Both the Catholics and Protestants (referring to the Reformed Churches) read the same Bible and worship the same God and Jesus Christ. The difference between the two is that the Roman Catholic Church is deeply steeped in feudal tradition while the Protestant churches have discarded some of the decadent things inherited from the Middle Ages and added some "new" things which appeal to the bourgeoisie. In addition, the protestants have done away with the complicated ways of saying prayers and organizing their churches. For instance, the Protestants believe in direct communion with God and pray to Him through the death of Christ, the son of God. The Catholics, however, maintain that they are so far separated from God that they not only need Christ as the "intermediary" but also the intercession of Christ's disciples and particularly Holy Mary. While the Protestants regard the gathering of several faithful as a congregation--with the pastor acting as the "guide"--the Catholics look upon the church as the "Kingdom of Heaven" with an organized ecclesiastical hierarchy including the Pope, cardinals, archbishops, bishops and priests. Believers can have their sins forgiven and receive the divine blessings of being near God only through these people holding "divine authority." The Protestants, however, believe that after death people either gain "eternal life" or go to "hell," without any alternative. The Catholics believe that after death people can go to "purgatory"-an intermediate state--for "expiatory purification" before the souls of those who die in God's grace may expiate venial sins and go to "heaven."

All these major differences described above show nothing essentially different between the two divisions of the Christian church. In the past the Roman Catholic Church was the mainstay of the feudal society in Europe. It was hostile to scientific research and banned freedom of expression, thus bringing about stagnation in European history as evidenced in the so-called "Dark Middle Ages."

In modern times both the Roman Catholic Church and Protestant churches are exploited by Western capitalist countries and used as instruments for ruling their people and carrying out aggression against other nations.

However, because of historical factors these two divisions of the Christian church for a long time have been opposed to each other. They have their respective systems and do things according to what they think are right in repudiating one another. On the other hand, organizationally, economically and operationally, imperialists control and take advantage of these two religious camps.

What merits the attention of the patriotic faithful and others in our country is that through the instigation of U.S. imperialism in recent years, these two camps of "international religious organizations" have clamored for religious "reforms," and a "movement for religious unity."

The New York Herald Tribune has admitted that the objective of this "unification movement' is to foster the "united and determined struggle" of these two religious camps for the purpose of countering the mounting influence of Marxism-Leninism. On the other hand, Time magazine says that the movement is intended to forge a unified and vigorous force for meeting world needs. These frank confessions show that in using the two major camps of the Christian church to sabotage domestic revolutionary movements and extending aggression abroad, U.S. imperialism is plotting for new and far-reaching intrigues.

Operate Agricultural Middle Schools Well To Serve the
Three Great Revolutionary Movements in the Countryside

by

CCP Feich'eng Hsien Committee and
Feich'eng Hsien People's Council

(Peking Kuang-ming Jih-pao, November 4, 1965)

The following is an account of how agricultural middle schools, including so-called part-farming, part-study secondary technical schools, are operated in Feich'eng hsien, Shantung province.

There are now 75 agricultural middle schools in the hsien with a total enrollment of 7,112 students, plus 4 secondary technical schools with a total of 285 students.

Since 1961, these schools have supplied 730 students to various production teams and trained for them 1,006 specialized technicians. But the hsien with its over 42 hundred production teams needs at least 30 thousand agro-technicians, not counting veterinary doctors, accountants, health workers, etc.--SCMP Ed.
