The South African Typographical Union has taken a further progressive step in the issue of a design to be used upon printed matter produced at. recognized fair rates of wages and under fair conditions. The advantages to our members of such an imprint must be obvious, and it is a means of acquainting the public in a matter upon which they would be otherwise ignorant. The idea is by no means a new one, as it is familiar to those who have lived in America, and any one in receipt of printed matter from North America and Canada will have observed it upon newspapers, magazines, etc. In those countries the label is in universal use, and merchants and traders are anxious to have it upon their circulars, billheads and advertising leaflets. It insures for them the retention of trade, as the American workman is a critical observer and puts his observations into practice, for in his dealings he leaves severely alone the firm that employs or encourages scab labor. He will not buy a hat, a suit of clothes, a pair of boots or any article of wearing apparel unless they bear the union guarantee. Why can not the workmen of South Africa act upon similar lines? He can if he will, and by so doing he will help to foster already existing industries in the country and to help create new ones. This means less importation of our daily needs and opening up channels of livelihood for our children." Trade unionists of whatever calling should now see that their unions do not encourage sweating in the printing trade. They have a means of ascertaining by the presence or absence of the label on the printed matter issued to them from their respective offices.-South Af rican Typographical Journal.
