HISTORY OF THE CUP.

race

The "America's" Cup was offered by the Royal Yacht Squadron, to be contested for in a (open to yachts of all nations) around the Isle of Wight. on the south coast of England, starting from Cowes, Aug. 22d, 1851. There were 18 entries and 15 starters, as follows:

American keel schooner "America," sailed by Capt. Richard Brown, and owned by John C. Stevens (then commodore of the New York Yacht

America's Cup.

The tenth formal challenge for the Cup was received by the New York Yacht Club on Sept. 3, 1898. from the Royal Ulster Yacht Club, on behalf of Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton, naming the yacht Shamrock, to be of 89 5-10 feet load water line length. The challenge was at once accepted, and on Sept. 7 all details were arranged for a match of best three in five races, the first to be sailed on Oct. 3, 1899, starting from Sandy Hook lightship.

Finley and Geo. L. Schuyler.
English yachts-Schooners: Constance, Ione,
Wyvern, Beatrice, Gypsy Queen and Brilliant.
Cutters: Freak, Bacchante, Mona, Alarm, Arrow.
Volante, Eclipse and Aurora.

The America won, beating the entire fleet "out of sight," except cutter Aurora, which finished 20 minutes later.

On July 8, 1857, the owners of the cup deeded it to New York Yacht Club, under certain restrictions, for a perpetual challenge cup from yachts of any nationality belonging to an organized club.

The Cup has been challenged for ten times, involving 25 races, the details of which are as follows:

[graphic]

Fleur de Lis.

First challenge-English schooner Cambria, James Ashbury, owner, representing Royal Thames Yacht Club. Race Aug. 8, 1870, over New York Yacht Club's inside course, against the club's entire fleet of schooners, as follows: Keel schooners-America (original winner), Alarm, Tarolinta, Restless, Fleetwing. Dauntless and Rambler. Centre-board schooners-Tidal Wave, Silvie, Madgie, Phantom, A syndicate was formed, Madeline, Idler, Magic, Palmer, Alice, Widgeon, of which C. Oliver Iselin | Calypso, Josephine, Eva, Halcyon, Jessie and was the managing member, to build a yacht to defend the cup, should she prove on trial to be a better boat than others previously built for the same purpose; it being apparent that the new challenger would be a far more formidable adversary than her predecessors. A yacht was ordered to be built by the Herreshoffs of Bristol, R. I., who turned out the Columbia.

During the summer of 1899 formal trial races were held with the yacht Defender, winner of the cup in 1895, in which the superiority of Columbia was clearly established, she defeating Defender in all weather and on all points of sailing. She was, therefore, chosen to defend the cup.

On Sept. 27, at request of Sir Thos. J. Lipton, an important change was made in the conditions governing the races, viz.: Inasmuch as we are of the opinion that the America's Cup races are no less a test of the strength of construction of the competing vessels than of their sailing qualities, and it is deemed advisable to avoid the embarrassment in which a vessel finds herself when called upon to decide whether to withdraw from a race upon the occurrence of an accident disabling her competitor, it is agreed that in the races between the Shamrock and the Columbia each yacht shall stand by the consequences of any accident happening to her, and that the uninjured vessel shall sail out the race.

Acting on the suggestions of J. Pierpont Morgan, Commodore of the New York Yacht Club, the U. S. Navy and Treasury Departments, recognizing the international character of the cup contests. the necessity of maintaining a clear course to prevent accidents and possible interfer

ence

with the yachts, detailed a fleet of four revenue cutters, several dispatch boats and five torpedo boats for the purpose, an action unparalleled in the history of the cup contests. Captain Robley D. Evans, U. S. N.. was placed in command and directed movements of the fleet from the revenue cutter Manning.

In the cup contests no less than seven attempts were made before one was completed. On Oct. 3, 5 and 7 the yachts could not finish within the time limit of five and one-half hours. On Oct. 10, 12, 13 and 14 no start was made, owing to fog and light winds. On Oct. 16 and 17 races were completed. Oct. 19 a start was made, but there was no wind to finish.
