The business of the market is distributing to retail dealers, and is estimated to aggregate $25,000,000 a year. A considerable portion of such amount is contributed by the market gardeners of Long Island, who dispose of their vegetables in the square of the market set apart for their use. 546 wagon loads of such produce have been sold on a Saturday in summer. Revenue to the city, as per report of fiscal year of 1898, from lot rents, $47,942.45, and from farmers' fees, $11,560.50. VEGETABLE MARKET-On Bushwick av., at

FULTON FISH MARKET-The building is the property of an association which pays $12,000 annual rent for the bulkhead occupied by it on the east side of South st.. between Fulton and Beckman sts., opposite Fulton general market. Business, sea food at wholesale.

Bounded by Washington, West, Fulton and Vesey sts. Present structure erected in 1880. Business, wholesale and retail. Revenue to the city in 1898 from rents, $67,670.44; from farmers, $1,786.25.

WEST WASHINGTON MARKET-City property. Originally an auxiliary of Washington Market, located on bulkhead and wharves of Hudson River, opposite that market and between Dey and Barclay sts. Moved to Washington and West sts. and 13th av., between Gansevoort and W. 12th sts., in 1889. Market for meats and vegetables, that portion between West st. and 13th av., while space between West and Washington sts. is left open for the standing of wagons of market gardeners in the sale of their vegetables. Nearly 500 wagon loads of vegetables have been sold in this square in a single day. Business, wholesale and distributing to retailers. Permits to do busiress in all public markets in Manhattan are revocable by the Comptroller without time notice. Revenue to city in 1898, from rents, $105,530.55; from farmers, $7,121.

For coaches, by time, one hour or less.. .... 1.50 Each additional half hour or part thereof.... 75 No hackman shall demand more than the legal rates of fare or stop for one stop not over five minutes long in a single trip. No hack shall be driven by the time rate at a pace less than five miles an hour. One piece of baggage, not over fifty pounds in weight, shall be carried without extra charge. Additional baggage shall be charged for at the rate of 25 cents a piece.

Legal Baggage Transfer Rates. The rates for express deliveries, unless otherwise mutually agreed, are fixed as follows: Between points within any borough, not more than five miles apart, each piece, 40 cents; not more than ten miles apart, each piece, 55 cents: not more than fifteen miles apart, each piece, 75 cents. Between points in different boroughs, onehalf the above rates in addition. Special deliveries to be mutually agreed upon.

THE TWELFTH CENSUS.

shall relate to the year ending December thirtyfirst next preceding the enumeration.

Three hundred supervisors were appointed, to be paid $125 at the completion of their work and in addition to this at the rate of $1 for each thousand or majority fraction of a thousand of the population enumerated in each thickly settled district. and $1.49 per thousand in the sparsely settled districts. Fifty thousand enumerators are to be appointed, their remuneration to range from $3 to $6 a day. The enumeration of the population is to ecmmence June 1, 1900, and all enumerators are required to submit their returns on or before July ist. The population in the city districts is to be counted within two weeks from the 1st of June. The President has appointed the following men as supervisors in New York State: District.

The law authorizing the taking of the Twelfth Census was approved March 3, 1899, just one day before the Fifty-fifth Congress adjourned. The President immediately appointed former Governor Wm. R. Merriam of Minnesota, Director of the Census, and he was confirmed by the Senate the same day. Frederick H. Wines, of Illinois, was appointed Assistant Director. The law requires the inquiries to be along the following lines: That the Twelfth Census shall be restricted to in-, quiries relating to the population, to mortality, to the products of agriculture and of manufacturing and mechanical establishments. The schedules' relating to the population shall comprehend for pach inhabitant the name, age, color, sex, conjugal condition, place of birth and place of birth, of parents, whether alien or naturalized, number of years in the United States, occupation, months unemployed, literacy, school attendance, and ownership of farms and homes; and the Director of the Census may use his discretion as to the construction and form and number of inquiries necessary to secure information under the topics aforesaid. The mortality schedules shall comprehead for each decedent the name, sex, color, age, conjugal condition, place of birth, and birthplace of parents, occupation, cause and date of death, and, if bo n within the census year, the date of birth.
