And he went in with them. 30 And it came to pass, whilst he was at table with them, he took bread, and blessed and brake, and gave to them. 31 And their eyes were opened and they knew him: and he vanished out of their sight. 32 And they said one to the other: Was not our heart burning within us, whilst he spoke in the way, and opened to us the scriptures? 33 And rising up the same hour they went back to Jerusalem: and they found the eleven gathered together, and those that were with them. 40 And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and feet. 41 But while they yet believed not and wondered for joy, he said: Have you here any thing to eat? 42 And they offered him a piece of a broiled fish, and a honeycomb. 43. Who said to him: Rabbi, (which is to say being interpreted, master) where dwellest thou? 39 He saith to them: Come and see. They came, and saw where he abode, and they staid with him that day now it was about the tenth hour. 40 And Andrew the brother of Simon Peter was one of the two who had heard of John,and followed him. 41 He findeth first his brother Simon, and saith to him: We have found the MESSIAS, which is, being interpreted, the CHRIST. 42 And he brought him to JESUS. And JESUs looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted, Peter. 43 On the following day he would 44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith to him: We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, JESUS the son of Joseph of Nazareth. 46 And Nathanael said to him: Can any thing of good come from Nazareth? Philip saith to him: Come and see. 47 JESUS saw Nathanael coming to him, and he saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile. 48 Nathanael saith to him: Whence knowest thou me? JESUS answered and said to him: Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig-tree, I saw thee. 49 Nathanael answered him, and said: Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the king of Israel. 50 JESUS answered, and said to him: Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig-tree, thou believest: greater things than these shalt thou see. 51 And he saith to him: Amen, amen I say to you, you shall see the heaven opened, and the Angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. CHAP. II. Christ changes water unto wine. AND the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee : and the mother of JESUS was there. 2 And JESUS also was invited, and his disciples, to the marriage. 3 And the wine failing, the mother of JESUS saith to him: They have no wine. 4 And JESUS saith to her: Woman, what is it to me and to thee? my hour is not yet come. Ver. 4. What is it to me, &c. Our Saviour by these words, which at first sight appear harsh, did not intend to rebuke his mother, (at whose request he wrought this first miracle,) but only to give a lesson to his disciples, that in the functions of their ministry, they should not be put out of their way by considerations of flesh and blood. 5 His mother saith to the wai-] ters: Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye. Now there were set there six water-pots of stone, according to the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three measures apiece. 7 JESUS saith to them: Fill the water-pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And JESUS saith to them: Draw out now, and carry to the chief steward of the feast. And they carried it. 9 And when the chief steward had tasted the water made wine, and knew not whence it was, but the waiters knew who had drawn the water; the chief steward calleth the bridegroom, 10 And saith to him: Every man at first setteth forth good wine, and when men have well drank, then that which is worse. But thou hast kept the good wine until now. 11 This beginning of miracles did JESUS in Cana of Galilee: and manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him. 12 After this he went down to Capharnaum, he and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they remained there not many days. 13 And the pasch of the Jews was at hand, and JESUS went up to Jerusalem: 14 And he found in the temple them that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting. 15 And when he had made as it were a scourge of little cords, he drove them all out of the temple, the sheep also and the oxen, and the money of the changers he poured out, and the tables he overthrew. 16 And to them that sold doves, he said: Take these things hence, and make not the house of my Fathe a house of traffic. 17 And his disciples remembered that it was written: The zeal of thy house hath eaten me up. 18 The Jews therefore answered and said to him: What sign dost thou shew unto us, seeing thou dost these things? 19 JESUS answered and said to them: Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20 The Jews then said: Six and forty years was this temple in building, and wilt thou raise it up in three days? 21 But he spoke of the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was risen again from the dead, his disciples remembered, that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the word that JESUS had said. 23 Now when he was at Jerusalem at the pasch, upon the festival day, many believed in his name, seeing his signs which he did. 24 But JESUS did not trust himself unto them, for that he knew all men, 25 And because he needed not that any should give testimony of man: for he knew what was in man. CHAP. III. Christ's discourse with Nicodemus. AND there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, ruler of the Jews. a 2 This man came to JESUS by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God: for no man can do these signs which thou dost, unless God be with him. JESUS answered and said to him: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith to him: How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born again? I 5 JESUS answered: Amen, amen say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he believeth not in the name of the he cannot enter into the kingdom only begotten Son of God. of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh, is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7. Wonder not, that I said to thee, you must be born again. 8 The Spirit breatheth where he will; and thou hearest his voice, but thou knowest not whence he cometh and whither he goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. 9 Nicodemus answered, and said to him: How can these things be done? 10 JESUS answered, and said to him: Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things? 11 Amen, amen I say to thee, that we speak what we know, and we testify what we have seen, and you receive not our testimony. 12 If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not: how will you believe if I shall speak to you heavenly things? 13 And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting. 16 For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him. 18 He that believeth in him, is not judged. But he that doth not believe, is already judged : because 19 And this is the judgment: because the light is come into the world, and men have loved the darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil. 20 For every one that doth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved. 21 But he that doth truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, because they are done in God. 22 After these things JESUS and his disciples came into the land of Judea; and there he abode with them, and baptized. 23 And John also was baptizing in Ennon near Salim; because there was much water there, and they came and were baptized. 24 For John was not yet cast into prison. 25 And there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews concerning purification: 26 And they came to John, and said to him: Rabbi,he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou gavest testimony, behold he baptizeth, and all men come to him. 27 John answered, and said: A man cannot receive any thing, unless it be given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves do bear me witness, that I said, 1 am not CHRIST; but that I am sent before him. 29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth with joy because of the bridegroom's voice. This my joy therefore is fulfilled. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease. Ver. 18. Is not judged. He that believeth, viz. by a fa th working through charity, is not judged, that is, is not condemned: but the obstinate unb ever is judged, that is, is con demned already, by retrenching himself from the society of Cht st and his church Ver, 19, The judgment. 1. e.
