THE

PREFACE.

THE Publisher of George Barrington's History of New South Wales (universally sanctioned by the Public), having been repeatedly solicited by a number of the Subscribers to that Work, to publish Mr. Barrington's VOYAGE in a uniform manner with the former, and having in his possession a corrected copy of the same Work much enlarged by the Author, wishing to avail himself of the opportunity of accommodating those Subscribers, and the Public at large, he can assure them, that in this volume improved by Mr. Barrington's

local knowledge, they will find nothing overlooked or omitted which has been

written before, by any of the various navigators or their journalists.

The present Work will, on the contrary, possess an advantage superior to all others hitherto published on the subject; that of a moderate price, while the former, from their voluminous size and immoderate price, are only to be found in the libraries of the rich and the curious: this, on the other hand, the Publisher intends for the more numerous class of readers, thus dispensing, that among the many which has hitherto been confined to the few.

But while this Work is divested of the less interesting formalities of a mere mariner's journal, and unclogged with a repetition of technical and professional phrases, the reader may be warranted in his expectation of meeting with all that is generally useful, curious, and entertaining, with a clear and

copious narrative of every important object in the course of this Voyage, and at less than half the expense of any of those that have preceded it.

The HISTORY of NEW SOUTH WALES having been honoured with a rapid and extensive sale, the Publisher flatters himself that his VOYAGE will likewise meet with a proportionate share of public patronage and esteem, especially as the increasing importance of the thriving colony of New South Wales, renders it more and more an object of enquiry every day.

To this volume it has been thought proper to add a full and particular account of the Life of Mr. Barrington; and which is also embellished with an elegant portrait from a striking likeness.
