E liv'd in the Reign of King Charles the Firft, and writ (be. fides one he join'd with Day and Rowley in) a Play, call'd, The Miferies of Inforced Marriage, a Tragi-comedy, 4to. 1637. Mrs. Behn took her Plot and great part of the Language of this Play, to her Town Fop; or, Sir Timothy Tawdry. The other Play he join'd-in, is called, The Travels of Three English Brothers.

John Wilson.

AN Author of the Place of whose Birth I am ignorant; he was once Recorder of Londonderry, and fometime refided in Dub lin, where he writ Belphegor, which was afterwards acted in London

He died about three Years fince, near Leicester-Fields, but where buried I know not. He is Author of four Plays; viz.

Andronicus Commenius, a Tragedy, 4to. 1663. Plot from Heylin's Cofmography in the Defcription of Greece, Cantacufenus, Leunclavius, &c.

Belphegor; or, The Marriage of the Devil; a Comedy, 4to. 1690. acted at the Queen's Theatre in Dorfet-Garden. Plot taken from a Novel of Machiavel, and Quevedo's Novels, 8vo.

The Cheats, a Comedy, 4to. Printed two Editions, the last 1671. This Play met with Applaufe when firft acted, and is a diverting Comedy.

The Projectors, a Comedy, 4to. 1665. This Play met with no great Success.

E was a Clergy-man, and liv'd in the Reign of Queen ElizaHbeth, in the City of Norwich; writ one Play, calling it, The Conflict of Confcience, a Paftoral, 4to. 1581. This is a Play of Morality, and may be prefented by fix Perfons.

John Wright...

Gentleman, if I mistake not, of the Middle-Temple, and is yet living, has writ Two Plays, of which in their Order: Thyeftes, a Tragedy, 8vo. 1674. dedicated to Bennet, Lord Sherrard. Tranflated from Seneca.

Mock Thyeftes, a Farce, 8vo. 1674. This is writ in Burlesque Verfe, and printed to be bound up with the former.

Author owns none of his own, but of fome Friend from the French. The Prologue written and spoke by Mr. Dogget; yet all not enough to make it take.

William Wycherley.

A Shropshire Gentleman, who has excell'd all Writers in all Languages, in Comedy, and moft of the Poets of the prefent Age in generous Dealing with thofe he owns his Friends, he has writ Four Plays,

The Country Wife, a Comedy, 4to. 1683. acted at the Theatre Royal. This Play from the beginning has been frequently acted with great Applaufe.

The Gentleman Dancing Mafler, a Comedy, 4to. 1673. acted at the Duke's Theatre.

Love in a Wood; or, St. James's Park; a Comedy, 4to. 1672. afted at the Theatre Royal, by his Majesty's Servants; and dedicated to the Dutchefs of Cleveland.

The Plain Dealer, a Comedy, 4to. 1678. acted at the Theatre Royal, by his Majefty's Servants. This is accounted the most excellent of all his Comedies, of which and the Author, Mr. Dryden and Mr. Evelyn gives a large Encomium. Some of the Characters are in Molliere's Le Mifanthrope, and Scarron's City Romance, Evo.
