ANCIENT DOLLS

ON

N this page are reproduced some remarkable specimens of dolls recently added to the collection in the British Museum. They are images from Greece and Rome and were undoubtedly toys at some period of their existence. Most curious among them are the figures of the mules and rider with baggage upon their backs. There is a good deal of life in some of the figures, particularly the dog, and the rider on the swan. The attitude of the feeding ape also is very like to nature. The jointed figure in the center of the page reminds one strongly of the dolls of

modern times which have been made upon exactly the same principles and which are supposed by people generally to be entirely modern inventions. The skill evidenced in these dolls seems unusual.

PEOPLE who have not visited

California can not realize the tropical, almost jungle-like growth of its flora. A cottage covered with white rose bushes, forming a perfect mass of foliage and bloom, is no very uncommon sight in some of the California cities. In fact the white climber is such a rapid grower that it is sometimes destructive. Cases have been known

where such a climbing rose would pull a house out of plumb or wreck a front porch. It can be readily seen that the weight of an enormous plant would be great enough to affect any building that was not of the strongest construction. The fact is that a tender shoot growing old and tough often destroys its support.

HIS New American Encyclopedic Dictionary is an encyclopedia and dictionary combined. As a dictionary, its five large volumes define 25,000 more words than any other American dictionary-250,000 words in all-with accuracy and remarkable fulness. As an encyclopedia, it treats of 50,000 subjects. In its preparation and revision it has engaged the careful, painstaking services of many scholarly editors eminent in scientific and literary research.

The five massive volumes contain 4731 pages of clear print on substantial paper, with hundreds of illustrations that aid and explain the definitions and encyclopedic articles. Each volume measures 11x9 inches. The work is issued in three styles of binding, but the paper and printing are alike in all. The illustration for this advertisement shows the half-leather binding.

This dictionary will be invaluable in every office and home-especially the home
where young people are growing up. No matter how many dictionaries you
