It would seem that more ought to be charged for goods sold over the counter. Then, tooand the source of the greatest trouble, probably expenses are too high. For a business of this size gross profits ought to run at least 35 per cent, and expenses ought to be about 25 per cent, thus yielding 10 per cent net, which, speaking generally, is the average.

A TEXAS STATEMENT.

Here we encounter an abnormally large gross profit-so large, indeed, that it is difficult to credit its correctness. However, the figures supplied us yield it, and we have no way of getting back of the records. One of our blank forms was used and the entries were very carefully filled in, apparently.

The percentage of gross profit is 54.8. Expenses are heavy, also-39.1 per cent. And so is the percentage of net profit-15.7. Our correspondent says in a letter accompanying his statement that the high rate of expense is accounted for by reason of the

prevailing at the time. A moment's thought will show the wisdom of this practice. You of course want to know what your stock is worth now. Any other valuation would throw you off the track entirely. If, through war conditions or for any other reason, there was an enormous increase or decrease in prices, your property would either increase or decrease in value, and you would have no guide at all as to your present worth if you put everything down at the original cost. Some stuff, too, might have so deteriorated as to be worthless, and if it were entered at the original value the inventory would be so faulty as to destroy all your profit calculations and your determination of total earnings at the end of the year.

the promising youngster at the right. Both pictures portray John F. Patton, of York, Pa. -in one 18 years of age, and in the other just turned 75.

It is a trite phrase to say that a man grows old gracefully, but it can be said of Uncle John Patton if it can of anybody under the

stars. He has mellowed and ripened as the years have gone by, and a gentler nature and a more suave and kindly manner it would be impossible to find.

Formerly a regular attendant at the annual meetings of the American Pharmaceutical Association, and one-time president of that body, he has been sorely missed at recent conventions. Every year scores ask if he is present, and then express keen regret over his absence. Particularly do the ladies feel depressed, for Uncle John is a bachelor who has always been, and still remains, in the front ranks of eligibility.
