PREFACE.

The increased interest shown throughout the country in contest speaking and the many requests made to me for "something newhas induced me to share these prize winners with the public.

The material in this book is suitable for general platform work, but my aim has been to select such matter as is especially adapted for the use of the contest speaker.

The variety offered should meet the need of both boy and girl in oratorical, dramatic, humor. ous and dialect studies. It may prove interesting to the lay reader as well.

The length of time given to the contestant varies in the different contest associations. Since these pieces are primarily intended for the use of students in High Schools and Colleges, who may be required to meet a specified time, they are not abridged as much as may be deemed necessary for younger pupils. Further abridgment is left to the director.

The generous co-operation of both authors and publishers has made this compilation possible. I am truly grateful and I feel that the student will join with me in expressing to them a hearty appreciation.
