527 METERÄNI (A. E.) HISTORIA BELGICA nostri potissimum temporis, usque ad annum 1598, numerous interesting portraits, folio, old red morocco extra, gilt edges, very fine copy, £2. 2s sine loco aut anne

The author, who was engaged in commerce at Antwerp, having acquired the confidence of various persons of eminence in the go vernment, succeeded in obtaining much of the secret history of the times, which was freely made use of in the above work. For some reason it was disavowed by the author shortly after publica tion, and a new edition. with very considerable alterations, subse quently issued in the Flemish language. The original work is interesting as containing the opinions of a Protestant Historian, but the Catholics are most unmercifully dealt with in it. 528 MICROSCOPICAL Society's Quarterly Journal, edited by Lankester and G. Notis illustravit G. SURENHUSIUS, engravings, 6 vols. folio, calf gilt, good copy, £4. 158

Amst. 1698-1703

The Mischna is a digest of the Oral Law, and of the Comments of the most famous Jewish Doctors, made by Jedudah Hakedosh, in the Second Century. It comprehends all the laws, institutions, and rules of life, which, besides the Scriptures, the Jews then supposed themselves bound to observe. There is not a traditionary usage alluded to in the New Testament regarding the ancient Jews but what may be verified from the Mischna. 541 Missale Salisburgense.-MISSALE de tempore et de sanctis secundum rubricas ECCLESIE SALCZEBURGENSIS, cum omnibus suis requisitis, handsomely printed in red and black in very bold type, with musical notes, coloured capitals, and two large illuminated initial letters, a volume of 261 leaves, folio, old stamped calf, £5. 58

Nürnberg, G. Stöchs ex Sulczpach, 1498 "EDITIO PRINCEPS, the parent text of the Order of the Service used in the monastery of St. Peter at Salzburg."-Dibdin.

In the present copy the first leaf (containing the arms of the convent) is wanting, and the last 14 leaves are much wormed in the bottom margins; otherwise it is singularly sound and clean. In the middle of the volume are 7 leaves of vellum containing the Te Igitur" &c. of the Canon, beautifully printed in exceedingly large type, and commencing with a fine illuminated "T." 542 Missale Frisingense.-MISSALE secundum Breviarium chori ECCLESIE FRISINGENSIS, printed in red and black on 269 leaves (of which 11 are vellum), with musical notes, coloured capitals, and large woodcut representing the Virgin and Child accompanied by St. Corbinian and St. Sigismund, folio, old stamped calf, £5. 58 Venetiis, E. Ratdolt, 1501

A capital specimen of early typography, as well as an exceedingly RARE book. It is not mentioned in Brunet, and was evidently unknown to Dibdin, as the curious printer's device which he states is contained only in the "Missale Pataviense" is to be found therein. Ratdolt was one of the five printers whose labours established the fame of the Venetian press, and he has been described as the " dear delight" of a skilful antiquary and tasteful collector. The present volume is slightly wormed, and worn and mended in a few places

There can be no doubt that Pinto visited the countries which he describes, modern travel shewing that some of his accounts are

Crusoe-like stories, that he has been stigmatized by Cervantes as
