"It will be a hundred years next August since this wonderful man was born into the world to exercise an influence, literary, social and political, not inferior in the aggregate to that of Shakespeare. But Scott's influence in another sphere was greater than Shakespeare's by as much as Shakespeare's in that sphere was greater than his: and the hundredth anniversary of his birth-day well deserves the honour with which it is proposed to celebrate it."-ATHENEUM.
