Method of procedure. Add the product in increasing quantity to a series of test tubes containing 10 c.c. of peptonised broth containing active culture of Bacillus Coli of 48 hours' growth: after ten minutes' contact, one drop of the mixture is withdrawn from each of the tubes and put into fresh tubes containing peptonised broth; these tubes are then placed in an incubator heated at 37 degrees for 48 hours, when they are examined in view of determining their sterility. The weakest quantities of the corresponding product in the tubes that have remained sterile serve as a basis for determining the microbicidal power. The examination of the sample under the "ultra-microscope" showed the presence of particles in a colloidal state. It will be seen from this that the bactericidal power of "Oscols" is comparable to that of corrosive sublimate, but with this important difference: the "Oscols" are non-toxic. Their bactericidal power is in all probability due to the electrical condition of the metallic particles, a condition which is only maintained while the metal remains in the colloidal state.
