NEW AUTO WHEEL

IT has long been recognized that the pneumatic tire, which has done so much for the automobile, is, nevertheless, one of its weakest points. Many wheels have been brought out, designed to give the ease and comfort afforded by the pneumatic-tired wheel, and at the same time have more lasting qualities. In spite of its defects, however, the pneumatic tire has as yet no serious rival.

There has recently been patented a resilient wheel, which, if it lives up to the claims of its inventor, will prove a menace to the supremacy of the older type.

The resiliency of the wheel is obtained in the construction of the spokes. These are radial and consist of tubular sections which telescope, one within the other. The ends rest within guide extensions

or braces fastened both to the hub and rim. Within the spokes are helical springs secured on pivots at each end. In one form the springs are exposed instead of being incased in the spokes and alternate with telescoping spokes to maintain alignment.

According to the inventor, any form of solid rubber or combination tire may be used, as this arrangement of springs furnishes sufficient resiliency to absorb all the jars incidental to travel over ordinary roads. It is claimed that this new wheel has the great advantage of being practically indestructible and is not likely to get out of order.

which feature protects it from dirt and dust when not in use. In addition, the same lever disengages a mechanical cleansing arrangement. In addition to this, every night the milk tank, with connections, is taken out and cleaned by hand.

Your choice is not limited to cold milk, you may have hot milk if you wish. In the latter event, a lever is pressed causing the milk to run over a special tank below which a spirit flame is constantly burning. The flame is also automatically regulated and only that quantity which fills a cup is heated. keep the milk fresh the larger tank conTo tains in the center a box with ice, which is insulated on all sides with double walls filled with a chemical material.

This great gear wheel and drum is twenty-one feet in diameter and weighs. 108,873 pounds. The hub is cast separately as well as the sections of the rim and the spokes of the wheel, and they are all securely bolted together as indicated in the photograph.

HOT MILK FROM SLOT MACHINE IN N Germany, experiments have recently been made with milk automatic devices, which were placed chiefly in schoolyards. Their success has been so satisfactory that they will be erected also at other public places.

a cup

The machine reporduced herewith contains a large tank filled with pure, boiled milk. After you have obtained from a separate smaller automat you put a coin in the slot, whereupon a tap will come out of a niche. By holding the cup under the tap you will reIceive a measured amount of milk. As soon as you relieve the foot lever the tap will disappear in the apparatus,

A RAILWAY FOR TABLE MOUNTAIN THE HE fact that the grant of a concession for a railway up Table Mountainthe majestic rock that guards the entrance to Cape Colony in South Africais recommended by a committee of be Cape Town Corporation will probly go a long way towards inducing the authorities to put the scheme into actual operation. It is thought locally that the rack system with electric traction, will be found the most suitable for the proposed line, more especially as electric power could probably be purchased at a low rate from either the Cape Town Tramway Company or from the municipality. Messrs. Nivera and Youatt, consulting engineers, opine that possible the Brennan gyroscope monorail system, which has been so much in evidence lately in the engineering world, might be adopted for Table Mountain, seeing the great advantages which are claimed for it. Table Mountain has an elevation of almost 4,000 feet above the sea level and is in great favor with local mountaineers. On its summit is the extensive watershed of the Cape Town and Wynberg reservoirs. It is pointed out that if the line were constructed it would probably mean that in a few years' time Table Mountain would boast a resident population on its summit, as is the case at several points in the trop

ics, where wealthy people have been glad to have some high and cool retreat to which to fly for refuge in the hot

season.

HUGE AEROPLANE TO SAIL SKIES THE "Aerator" is a new man-carrying

aeroplane that was first put to a successful test the first of October, 1907, at Sayre, Pa. A series of flights were made, the longest being two hundred feet, at a height of forty feet. The inventor is having built a larger machine, which he expects will be completed within a short time. This larger aeroplane is designed to carry nine persons.

It will be equipped with an engine of sixty horse power, driving a wheel seven feet in diameter, at 900 revolutions per minute.
