This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are So foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? a Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all. Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the Gospel unto you at the first. And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me. Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? iv. 9-16. Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? v. 7.

VER. 7.

“Ο οὐκ ἔστιν ἄλλον εἰ μή τινές εἰσιν οἱ ταράσσοντες ὑμᾶς, καὶ θέλοντες μεταστρέ ψαι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Χριστοῦ.

Which is not another ; " but there be some that trouble you, b and would pervert the Gospel of Christ.

a They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them, Gal. iv. 17. I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be, v. 10. And certain men which came down from Judæa, taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved, Acts xv. 1.

VER. 8.

̓Αλλὰ καὶ ἐὰν ἡμεῖς, ἢ ἄγγελος ἐξ οὐρα τοῦ εὐαγγελίζηται ὑμῖν παρ' ὅ εὐαγγελιστάμεθα ὑμῖν, ἀνάθεμα ἔστω.

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other Gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

a Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God, which L command you, Deut. iv. 2. For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book, Rev. xxii. 18, 19.

Η ζητῶ ἀνθρώποις ἀρέσκειν ; εἰ γὰρ ἔτι "Αρτι γὰρ ἀνθρώπους πείθω ἡ τὸν Θεόν : ἀνθρώποις ἤρεσκον, Χριστοῦ δοῦλος οὐκ ἂν ἤμην.

a For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

a But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the Gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts, 1 Thess. ii. 4.

b Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world, is the enemy of God, Jam. iv. 4. See on Rom. i. ver. 1. clause 2.

Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.

Επειτα μετὰ ἔτη τρία ἀνῆλθον εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ἱστορῆσαι Πέτρον· καὶ ἐπέμεινα πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡμέρας δεκαπέντε.

a And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judea which were in Christ:

Μόνον δὲ ἀκούοντες ἦσαν, ὅτι ὁ διώκων ἡμᾶς ποτε, νῦν εὐαγγελίζεται τὴν πίστιν ἥν ποτε ἐπόρθει.

a But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed,

CHAP. II. VER. 1.

a Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.

a When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dis

putation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem, unto the apostles and elders, about this question. And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Sathe Gentiles: and they caused great maria, declaring the conversion of joy unto all the brethren. And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders; and they declared all things that God had done with them, Acts xv. 2-4.

̓Ανέβην δὲ κατὰ ἀποκάλυψιν, καὶ ἀνεθέμην αὐτοῖς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον ὃ κηρύσσω ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσι· κατ ̓ ἰδίαν δὲ τοῖς δοκοῦσι, μή πως εἰς κενὸν τρέχω, ἡ ἔδραμον.

And I went up by revelation, a and communicated unto them that Gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but * privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run,

But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:

Διὰ δὲ τοὺς παρεισάκτους ψευδαδέλφους, οἵτινες παρεισῆλθον κατασκοπήσει τὴν ἐλευθερίαν ἡμῶν, ὃν ἔχομεν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, ἵνα ἡμᾶς καταδουλώσωνται·

VER. 5.

Οἷς οὐδὲ πρὸς ὥραν εἴξαμεν τῇ ὑποταγῇ, ἵνα ἡ ἀλήθεια τοῦ εὐαγγελίου διαμείνῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς.

To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour, that the truth of the Gospel might continue with you.

VER. 6.

̓Απὸ δὲ τῶν δοκούντων εἶναί ὁποῖοί Τι, πότε ἦσαν, οὐδέν μοι διαφέρει πρόσωπον Θεὸς ἀνθρώπου οὐ λαμβάνει· ἐμοὶ γὰρ οἱ δοκοῦντες, οὐδὲν προσανέθεντο

But of those who seemed to be somewhat, whatsoever they were, it maketh a God accepteth no no matter to me: man's person: for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing

VER. 7.

̓Αλλὰ τοὐναντίον, ἰδόντες ὅτι πεπίστευμαι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς ἀκροβυστίας, καθὼς Πέτρος τῆς περιτομῆς,

But contrariwise, a when they saw that the Gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the Gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;

a Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them, Acts xv. 12.

VER. 8.

For before that certain came from James, a he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.

a They that were of the circumcision contended with him, Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, Acts xi. 2—4.
