SIR: In compliance with law, I submit herewith a report of the transactions of this department for the year ending November 15, 1897.

During the year there were filed and recorded in this department 1,135 articles of incorporation and 811 miscellaneous certificates relating to corporations, classified as follows:

The total capital invested during the year, original and increased, was $73,381,020, as compared with $120,057,850 for the year 1896, being a decrease of $46,676,820. The amount invested by the several classes of corporations, is as follows:
