Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 15th April, 1881. JOHN JAMES, Esq., My Dear Friend, Over a quarter of a century has gone by since I, an entire stranger and a mere child, landed upon the shores of Lake Michigan. You extended to me, as you have to thousands from first to last, the hand of welcome and friendship. Whether present or absent, that friendship has never failed me; and I take this not altogether inappropriate occasion to record the fact, and convey the gratitude of yours faithfully, EVAN R. JONES. Wist. Southern Gittman's 9-30-27 15618 000000 IT PREFACE TO THE EDITION OF 1881. T is not the object of this book to encourage emigration to the United States, but rather to furnish complete, authentic, and impartial information to those who contemplate leaving "the Old Home" to try their fortunes in the West. The step is one of serious importance, and those meditating upon it are entitled to the best evidence from the most reliable sources. Histories, books of travel, and other works, containing much of the desired information, there are in abundance. But these are comparatively voluminous and expensive; and I am not aware that anyone has hitherto placed the necessary information before the people in a condensed form, and for a small sum. The present volume is an attempt in that direction. Concerning my qualification for this work, I will be at once frank and brief. I spent most of my early life in one of the great wheat-growing States of the West. During the last twelve years I have resided in England as United States Consul; and much important information is available to me in consequence of my position. Moreover, I have crossed the Atlantic several times, making careful records of my experience during the voyages: and I am personally acquainted with several routes traversing the United States, both by rail and along the rivers and the Chain of Lakes. |
