ments, muscle-beating, bathing, etc. Physicians will find in this little volume many useful hints for their own guidance.

A Practical Treatise on Obstetrics. Vol. III. (4 vols ), The Pathology of Labor. By A. Charpentier, M. D., Paris. Illustrated with lithographic plates and wood engravings. This is also Vol. III. of the Cyclopedia of Obstetrics and Gynecology" (12 vols.), issued monthly during 1887. Price of the set, $16.50. New York: William Wood & Company.

In a former notice of this treatise we took occasion to emphasize its excellencies. The present volume is in all respects the equal of its predecessors, exceeding them, indeed, in the richness of its illustrations. All the forms of dystocia, whether maternal or fetal, are fully discussed.

A chapter on the use of Ergot is appended, in which the author expresses himself with no uncertain sound, adopting in its entirety Pajot's law: "As long as the uterus contains anything, be it child, placenta, membranes, clots, never administer Ergot. We reserve it, therefore, purely for uterine inertia after the termination of the third stage of labor. First empty the uterus of its contents and then give Ergot." The American Editor, Prof. E. H. Grandin, of New York, calls this rule "golden," an opinion with which all careful observers will agree.

Quiz Compends, No. 9. A Compend of Surgery for Students and Physicians, by Orville Horwitz, M. D. Demonstrator of Anatomy in Jefferson Med. College, etc. Third Edition, tho hly Revised, Enlarged and Improved. 91 Illustrations. Philphia: P. Blakiston, Son & Co. 1887. $1.00.

The general character-the best of their kind-of these compends is well known by physicians. That this particular one has reached three

editions clearly indicates its popularity.

Evacuative Medication (Cathartics and Emetics). By Henry M. Field, M. D., Prof. of Therapeutics, Dartmouth Medical College, Etc., Philadelphia: P. Blakiston, Son & Co., 1887. Columbus: A. H. Smythe. Cloth; 8vo; pp. 288; $1.75.

This little work is essentially unique, and on a most important subject. Under the head of cathartics are included chologogues, mineral cathartics, differential therapeusis, cathartic medication and general principles. Under emetics are described topical or irritant emetics, emetic medication, and the arrest of vomiting,

The author's style is pleasant and forcible, and his knowledge and research varied and extensive. After reading the book, one feels like calling for "more."
