BRAMWOOD, EDITOR AND PUBLISHER, INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA Note and Comment THE reclamation of Pittsburg should be an inspiration to every jurisdiction in which there is a non-union office. NEARLY 200 names were added to the membership roll of Pittsburg Typographical Union, on January 9, when five daily newspapers were brought under the banner of unionism. THE donations to the Home building fund continue to grow. Up to January 21 approximately $3,500 had been received from various sources-local unions, chapels and individuals contributing to this worthy cause. THE financial statement of the secretarytreasurer in this issue will show that some pensioners were in receipt of two checks during the period between December 21, 1908, and January 21, 1909. The payments were made for the four weeks ending December 19 and January 16, and in consequence appear in the same monthly report. TO FACILITATE the work of the label campaign that is being conducted from International headquarters, it is necessary that the name and address of either the chairman or secretary of label committees of subordinate unions should be on file in the office of President Lynch. Officers of local unions and members of label committees will please take notice and see that the names and addresses of the proper officials are forwarded to the International presi dent at once. NUMBER Two FOR the past several months THE JOURNAL has been deluged with communications discussing the features, pro and con, of section 108, general laws, known as the priority law. As is usual in a prolonged discussion of an important question, some of the writers have been unable to refrain from the use of personalities. The debate has now reached a stage where it seems impossible to raise a new phase of the subject or further enlighten the readers on any new points. In the opinion of THE JOURNAL, either the matter should again be submitted to a referendum vote for final settlement or delegates should be elected to the next convention pledged to vote either for or against abrogation of that section of the general laws. THE printer delegates to the Washington State Federation of Labor, held at Walla Walla last month, formed a state organization of typographical unions, along the line of those of similar character which have been in existence in New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and other states. A. W. Swenson, of Spokane, was chosen as the first president and C. E. Fisk, of Seattle, was elected secretary. Similar organizations have been of much benefit to the International Typographical Union, and the new state conference of typographical unions in the northwest will prove no exception to the rule. THE fight of the Werner Company against the allied printing trades of Akron, Ohio, continues. This company pub |
