Spirits of America: A Social History of Alcohol
Although flippant and poorly cited, Burns shows the development from the saloon to the speakeasy to teenage house parties and the remarkably consistent
trends in reactionary groups such as the WCTU, the ASL, and MADD. He spices the dry (haha) recitation of facts with entertaining personal accounts, vivid descriptions, and gossipy tangents into the lives of the temperance workers.
