The State Engineer being in need of an increased force it was determined to hold another examination as soon as the arrangements could be completed - to hold it in New York and to advertise it in technical journals. This course was accordingly pursued, the examination, (No. 9), was held on the eighteenth of October in the rooms of the American Society of Civil Engineers, which had been kindly tendered to us for the purpose, and the result was eminently satisfactory. Twenty-one applicants appeared of

Upon the thirteenth of September, an examination (No. 8), was held at the Batavia Institution for the Blind, for principal of the literary department and for female teacher of the piano-forte at that institution.

The examination was conducted directly by Commissioner Richmond and the chief examiner and Mrs. George Lewis, a musician of distinction from Buffalo, in conjunction with the local board, consisting of John H. Ward, Esq., Carlos A. Hulls, Esq., and Horace H. Hutchins, M. D., and in the preparation and marking of the musical papers the examiners had the assistance as musical expert of Signor James Nunó, also of Buffalo. Several members of the board of trustees of the institution were present throughout the day.

An examination, (No. 10,) was held at the office of the commission at Albany on the twenty-fifth of October, for accountants, and with a special view to temporary need on the part of the railroad commission, for an expert in railroad accounting. The two branches were kept separate. Three applicants appeared, only one of whom reached the eligible list for accountant, and this candidate did not undertake the papers in railroad accounting. The two others who had been unsuccessful in the general examination, were successful

in the more restricted field. The general examining board marked the papers with results as follows:

The usual general examination (No. 11), for clerkships, messengerships, etc., was held November fifteenth, simultaneously at Albany, Auburn, Binghamton, Brooklyn, Buffalo, Elmira, Ithaca, Middletown, Newburgh, New York, Rochester, Syracuse, and Utica. The examination had been advertised to be held also in Geneseo, Greenport, Jamestown, Oswego, Plattsburgh, Poughkeepsie, Watertown and Whitehall, but no applicants appeared at either of these places. Notice was published in at least two newspapers issued in each county in the State, one representing each of the two great parties; large numbers of documents containing information and instruction were sent out, and every effort was made to give to the examinations the greatest possible publicity. In conducting these examinations outside of Albany, we had as usual, the assistance of a number of public spirited citizens, and for the service, our thanks are due to the following gentlemen: Hon.
