The fame Anfwered by ARISTUS,

THERE may be feveral reafons affigned for the tranfplanting of marine bodies upon land, or even the tops of mountains bel fides that of the deluge; fuch as the violent convulfions of at earthquake, leaving a tract of land, where, prior to that wa fea. The overflowing of different rivers particularly the Ni which annuelly ove flows all lower Egypt, the Niger which i the fame manner overflows all the low country throughout th middle of Negroland, and the Ganges which annually ave flow the flat country in Aua for feveral miles adjoining to it, a leaving, no doubt the bodies of the fiany tribe upon the land Befidea thefe, the violent agitation of winde, and the hurri canes attended with thunder, lightning, and rain, particular! in the Weft-Indies, making the very elements, as it were, - { exchange places, the fea to depofit its contents upon the lat Add to this, the frequent phænomena of the water spouts, pa ticularly thofe which rife in form of a whirl-wind, cr, as were, raifing water (by Archimedes's-fcrew, in the air,) from the fea; for there are, no daubt, many badjes of fh throw at these times, upon high lands adjoining the fea, when the happen pear, and in the direction of the land. Thefe 2 reafons which may not a little conduce to account for the trai planting of fome of thofe marine bodies, found upon the la or even the tops of mountains; yet, I believe that nothing t the deluge can account for thofe found, in mine and often wiw, in a folid rack.

XLI. Answered by DOLEMAN.

LET x denote the number, then per question, x x —

√2 or 4x4 18. Hence x =4√18 = 1.4564.

Aufwers were received from Mers. Ariftarchus, Artufo, Bulmer, Dobfon, Tom Paine, Stephens, and Savill.

XLII. Anfwered by STOCKTONIENSIS. THE three diffances make 150 yards, and B travels 5 0, which is one-third, confequently he must pay one third of the expence, viz. 1:13:4 being 83. per yard. Now for every yard that Cgoes farther than B (who is at a mean diftance from the well) let him have 83. abated of the fum B pays; and for every yard

that

[ocr errors][merged small]

that A has less to go than B, let him pay 8d. more than B's to,tal fum. Hence £.2 A's fhare of the expence; £.1:13:4 B's fhare; and £.1:6: 8 C's.

Some of the Contributors, by a different procefs, bring But the answer thus: A's share 27. os. 6d. halfpenny; B's fare 17. 125. 5d. farthing; and C's share 17. 75. od. farthing.

Mers. Ariftarchus, Artuofo, Bulmer, Doleman, Mifs Dobby, the Rev. Mr. Graves, Tom Paine, Ane o' the Swine, Stephens, and Savill, favoured us with Answers.

XLIII. Aniwered by ARTUoso.

FOR 100 read 140. Put a = 50 yards, the diagonal, b 70, half the perimeter, and x = one fide of the garden, then

hence x = 40 yards, the length of the garden, confequently 30
yards its breadth. Again, put 40 yards, or 120 feet, :

Much in the fame manner was the answer given by Meffrs. Ariftarchus, Bulmer, Dobfon, Doleman, Tom Paine and Savill.

XLIV. By Mr. W. STEPHENS, Darlington.
