1 Go to now, ye rich
that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them hall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire: ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.
4 Behold the hire of the laborers, which have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth,
men, weep and howl for your miseries
5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. 6 Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.
Here is a portraiture of aristocracy from the fountain of Truth, indeed the holy scripture is full of it. But the cunning craftiness of men, who lie in wait to deceive, would explain it all away by giving things wrong names. But 1 humbly trust a plain statement of simple truth, will turn the attention of mankind to this interesting, and all important subject. That the Aristocrat has been always the proud oppressor of man—the impious corrupter of the worship of God-the powerful barrier in the way of reforming abuses-and the cruel murderer of the unoffending and unresisting righteous, since the world began.
But as the divine writings have given us a true history of the wicked conduct, tyranny and oppression of the misrule of the few over the many. We have the same infallible word to inform us of its downfall and utter extinction, and the time and the manner of the accomplishment of the happy emancipation of the world, from the bondage and thraldom that man has so long groaned under.
In the second chapter of the second epistle to the Thessalo
nians, the apostle by divine inspiration, tells the church of the dreadful apostacy, or falling away of some of the professors of christianity, after comforting them under the cruel persecutions of Pagan Rome; he informs them, that the day of Christ was not at hand, as some deceivers had suggested.
1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him.
2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter, as from us, as tha the day of Christ is at hand.
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Here is the rise and diabolical character of the man of sin, the son of perdition, his awful heaven daring impiety, it 10 drawn to the life, that there is no mistaking the likeness, let any one acquainted with the history of the Popes and the Inquisition, testify.
5 Remember ye not, that when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
6 And now ye know what withholdeth, that he might be re vealed in his time.
7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work; only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
The apostle had evidently told the Church of the Thessalonians while he was with them, that the mystery of iniquity in the carnal heart was already working in the ambitious and wordly minded professors, who must like Diotrephes, have the pre-eminence in the church, under the name and title of Bishops, the very hot-bed that produced Popery. But a most frightful apostacy would at last take place, under a horrible.
impostor, and that the pagan Roman government would first be removed out of the way, but to write this in the epistle would be some pretext for their cruel persecutors.
8 And then shall that wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.
Here the spirit of the Lord's mouth, or the word of God is to consume the man of sin, the son of perdition. Oh ye heralds of the Cross! and ye humble faithful distributers of the holy Bible, see here what a blessed work you are engaged in, see what an important and honorable duty, and what a precious privilege to be co-workers with God in consuming antichristian delusion, superstition, and idolatry from the minds of your fellow-sinners, by aiding in any way in circulating the word of God, the divine light of life in our dark world. And let the American church and the American Bible Society arise in the strength that is in Christ Jesus, and take encouragement from his infallible word. Here is an almighty shall in this precious text. The Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth.― Let us be up and doing. We see whose work it is, and we see whose duty and privilege it is. Let us follow in the steps of our elder sister, the British and Foreign Bible Society, and let the whole Church prepare the way of the Lord, and increase the blessed work till all the moral and anti-christian darkness shall be dispelled from the world. The signs of the times show that the light has now begun to shine more and more, to the coming of the perfect day, when all the darkness of delusion, superstition and idolatry shall be destroyed, ere long, with the brightness of the coming of the Lord.
The Apostle goes on to inform the church, of the character and coming of the man of sin, the son of perdition, in the 9th verse: "Even him whose coming is after the working of satan with all power and signs and lying wonders. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil."
"And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved."
In the 9th verse, that speaks of lying wonders we know that the wonders of the popish monks would fill many volumes, and they receive not the love of the truth that they might be saved. Theirs is a wilful obstinate rejection of the holy Bible, and of the truth as it is in Jesus; and a wilful deliberate and obstinate choosing of fables and delusions.
"And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie, that they all might be damned who believe not the truth, but had pleasure in unrightousness." Behold the awful consequences of rejecting the means of grace, the glorious gospel of God our Saviour.
But it was reserved for the 'beloved disciple' to see in vision the rise, progress and downfall of the antichristian apostacy, and the great city Babylon, the spiritual Sodom and Egypt; & to leave us a history of the church, and of the world, to the end of time; and especially the glory and felicity of the latter day church. There is no difference of opinion amongst commentators, who is the antichrist of the Apocalypse, the beast with seven heads and ten horns, the man of sin, and son of perdition. But with all due deference for the labors of commentators, those excellent and pious men, who have labored to explain these mysteries, I must say that none of their writ ings which I have had access to, have pointed out the spiritual Babylon, the spiritual Sodom & Egypt, nor the two witnesses, and the three unclean spirits like frogs-the very key to all the Book.
One of the best political writers of the present day, gives a lucid view of the late revolution of France, as the inevitable & natural consequence of the failure of the former Revolution un der the fictitious signature of O. P. Q. I cannot present the reader with any thing more interesting on that important and momentous subject. He allows that the history of the French
Revolution has never yet been written. I am of the same opinion, but when I take the best political view of it, and the present commotions in the world that can possibly be written. I feel myself like the poor mariner at sea, without a compass, without a chart, and without a helm or pilot. Until I consider the signs of the times, in connexion with the divine prophecies, then indeed the mind has something to rest upon, is at home as it were, not depending on a change of ministers for peace or war; and the careful reader of the oracles of truth will at once say, (not conjecture) though the Rulers and lordlings of the earth are unconscious of what they are doing, -There will be a War! a universal War!! such as has never been since men were upon the earth. I shall give the reader a view of the passing events as revealed to the world in the scriptures of truth after furnishing him with the observations of this fine writer.
THE HISTORY AND MYSTERY OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION OF 1830.- FROM THE FREE ENQUIRER.
The French Revolution of 1830 was inevitable. thing must have a commencement, so every thing must have an end. The French Revolution commenced in 1789-more than forty years ago. At that time the Court tried in vain to pre vent it, as in the sequel it endeavored to quash it, Under the. direction of Maurepas, Louis XVI. appointed popular Minis ters, and made attempts at reform; under the direction of the queen, he appointed courtier ministers, and made at'empts to establish absolute authority. Oppression was as unsuccessful as partial reform. After having uselessly resorted to the courtiers for economy-to the parliament for imposts-to the capitalists for loans-Louis XVI. had recourse to a new class of contributors, and made an appeal to the privileged. He demanded from the Notables, composed of the Noblesse and the Clergy, a participation in the charges of the
