thing. Among their numerous idols, Bell or Baal, the image of Nimrod, was sure to be the first object of their blind worship and adoration. So universally did the image of Baal become their idol throughout all the East, that even the Israelites, the peculiar people of God, were so stupid as to receive it with numerous other heathen idols, from Egypt and other surrounding countries, till there was comparatively few of that highly favored people that did not become idolators.

Now observe, this DesVerse 38, "And where

When Nebucadnezzer, the monarch of Babylon and successor of the tyrant Nimrod, saw in a vision the governments of the whole earth under his successors, till a stone cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron & clay, and brake them to pieces, (Dan. II, 34) then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver and the gold broken to pieces together,&became like the chaff of the summer threshing floor. And the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them. And the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. pot was master of the whole world. soever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of heaven hath he given into thy hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.. (39) And after thee shall arise another kingdom, inferior to thee; and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. (40) And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things; and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. (41) And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potter's clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided, but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixt with miry clay, (42)and whereas the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly broken. (43) And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but

they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed, and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. 45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay the silver and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king, what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure."

Now here are a few verses of the Divine Word, full of the most stupendous and awfully grand events that have ever transpired in this world, or throughout the boundless empire of God.On it, tens of thousands of volumes have been written, and when tens of thousands of volumes more are written, the sublime subject is still exhaustless, and will remain so throughout the endless years of eternity. A mystery which the angels desire to look into. It is well worthy of remark here, that this Despot, this successor of the tyrant Nimrod, the master of the world, like the wizzard and false prophet Balaam, before him, should be favored with a revelation of the astonishing events that should come to pass in the world and in the church, till the consumation of all things. Perhaps this tyrannical king would not believe one syllable of the holy prophet's interpretasion, if he had not first told him every item of his dream, that he had forgotten. When an unenlightend heathen, on the first view of some grand and magnificent scene in the works of creation, is filled with wonder and admiration of the works of the great Creator-like the young Indian chief that accompanied Capt. Carver to the falls of St. Anthony, and was overwhelmed with the grandeur of that beautiful cascade, with awe and recverence for the supposed Deity whose dwelling he thought it was, his silver ornaments, his tobacco and every thing he valued most, he threw into the water as an offering to the unknown God:-buty when God, in infinite condescension and mercy, is

/eal himself to the poorest sinner, or the proudest he guilty race of man, one will say, with wonder ament, like the woman of Sychar, "come and see a old me all things that ever I did, is not this the Christ? And the greatest monarch will instantly prostrate himself in the dust, in the deepest humility, & acknowledge the Lord to be the Supreme Ruler and governor of the universe. (Verses 46 and 47) "Then the king, Nebucadnezzar, fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him. Then the king answered unto Daniel, and said, "Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldst reveal this secret.' About forty-eight years afterward, this same holy prophet, Daniel, had a clearer vision of the same things, under other symbolical figures.

In the 7th chapter: 2 "Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven strove upon the great sea. 3 And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. 4 The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings; I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made to stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given unto it.— 5 And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.

6 After this, I beheld, and lo, another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl: the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.

7 And after this I saw in the night visions, & hehold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns,

8 I considered the horns, and behold there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things. 9. I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool; his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. 10 A fiery stream issued and came forth before him: thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgement was set, and the books were opened! I beheld then, because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake. I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed and given to the burning flame. Now here is a minute history seen in vision of the four great empires of antiquity, their rise and their continuance, their change of masters, from time to time and the grand apostacy, and the final and fearful destruction of all of them. Likewise the holy prophet had a view of the eternal tl rɔne, and of Him who sits upon it. And a clear view of the infintely holy, pure and righteous government of Him who is the alone Creator and preserver; and the infinitely wise and gracious disposer of all things in our wretched and revolted world; and in the church and throughout his boundless empire.

The tyranny, misrule, oppression and idolatry, and treading under foot the rights and liberties of mankind that began with the tyrant Nimrod, continued on with all these successors of this grand impostor, and oppressor of the human race, under whatever name or modification they might assume. this day, the same spirit of the ancient Babylon, actuates them all. Hence the name mystic Babylon, the great city Baby lon, in contradistinction to the holy city (the Church of God,) is applied by the holy spirit to all the governments of the world.

13. I saw in the night visions; and behold, one like the son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the an cient of days, and they brought him near before him.

14. And there was given him dominion and glory and a kingdom; that all people, nations and languages, should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom, that which shall not be destroyed.

15. I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body; and the visions of my head troubled me.

Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: searching what or what manner of time the spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves; but unto us they did minister the things which are reported unto you, with the Holy Ghost sent down from Heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
