that it may become spiritual food and nourishment to the soul, As new born babes desire the sincere milk of the word that they may grow thereby. We have also, the divine assurance, that they who so digest the holy word of God, must prophecy again before many peoples and nations, and tongues, and kings. Now all this has been, and is now literally fulfilling at this day; when the great reformers translated, and circulated, the holy scriptures extensively in the world; the darkness of ages, the long and gloomy night, of ignorance, superstition, and the shadow of death, was dispelled. And men began to see that they had natural and indefeasible rights, from the Divine Creator, that no set of priests or kings, the tools and engines of aristocracy, had a right to wrest from them. And although mankind at first could only see men as trees walking; by degrees the light of the gospel and its accompanying blessings, the light of science and the mechanic arts, assisted by the power of printing, extended wider and became brighter till it brought about the American Revolution; when, for the first time in the world, Equal Rights and Privileges and rational liberty were recognized by a whole nation as the only bassis of human government. Thus the American Republic became an ensign to the nations of the earth; and greatly contributed to produce the French Revolution. But although the whole family of man, were directly or indirectly interested in these two grand events the reformation and the American revolution. The angel swore by him that liveth forever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things that are therein, that the time should not be yet. But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets. This is said for the comfort and consolation of the Christian, under the cruel persecutions of Antichrist, which were still inflicted on the church and on the world. Upon the total subversion of Constantinople and the Grecian

Empire, the Greek Christians fled in every direction from the barbarity of the Turkish limb of Antichrist, carrying with them the holy scriptures; their learning and books greatly strengthened the remnant of faithful christians in the west, and contributed mightily to the revival of learning the translation and circulation of the Holy Bible, and finally the reformation. But the chief instruments in the divine hand, were the christian congregations; the Waldenses and Albigenses in the rallies of Piedmont;but having to encounter the thunders of the Vatican from the popish limb of Antichrist, the true church of Christ was threatened for a while, with entire extermination from the world. A code of the most furious persecution was instituted against the Bible and all who would read it; or put it into the hands of the people. but the revival of learning, had produced a new scene in the world, of an extraordinary character, nu merous academies and colleges, had brought forth many men of science and literature, who looked down upon the illiterate multitude with the same kind of contempt, as their kingly and priestly oppressors, had done before them. Andthese men of science, seeing the mummeries and dogmas, tricks and imposi tions, of both kings-craft and priest-craft, they are equally in dignant at and disgusted with both; and an opportunity was afforded them, when the people of France honestly asserted their just rights, against all their tyrannical oppres sors, and would have established a republic. But these new kind of aristocrats, the disciples of Voltaire, Rauseau, and Condorset having gained the ascendency. in the revolution, destroyed both it and themselves, kings-craft and priest-craft, and what was falsely called the christian religion, being only its counterfeit.

The time was now come when the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it, únto the end. Daniel 7. 26. 27. And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom, under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints, of the Most

High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. There are three different expressions of the period of time during which the church is to be subjected to suffering and depression; and the world to be subjected to the oppression and misrule of the spiritual Babylon. Twelve hundred & sixty days and forty-two months: a time, times, and half a time; all which signify the same duration; or twelve hundred and sixty prophetic years.

There are four remarkable predictions in the Apocalypse, and two in Daniel, each connected with one of those periods.Rev. 11. 2. The gentiles shall trample the holy city under foot forty-two months. Now under the Old Testament dispensation, the whole human race were called gentiles, except those which belonged to the Jewish Church So here, all that are not citizens of the holy city (the church of Christ,) are gentiles, still, and belong to the great city Babylon, not popery only;but Heathenism, Mahommedanism, and popery. Rev. 13. 5.The beast shall oppress the saints 42 months, or rather he had power to continue 42 months from the rise of popery, foritis the beast that carrieth the woman that was drunk with the blood of the saints. Rev. 17.7. And the angel said unto me, wherefore didst thou marvel; I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, (popery,) and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. Rev. 11.3. The two witnesses the Old and New Testaments, shall prophecy in sack-cloth 1260 days. Rev. 12. 6. The woman (the church,) shall be in the wilderness 1260 days. Dan. 7. 25. And the blasphemous king shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and they shall be given into his hand, until a time and times, and the dividing of time. Now all these prophecies, refer to the one self same event, and the same period of time. The 11th chapter, in view of the great calamities, which were coming upon the church and people of God, commences with an exhibition of the special care of God for his own peculiar treasure in our dark sinful and benighted world. 1. And there was given me

a reed, like unto a rod; and the angel stood saying, rise and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that wor ship therein.

Here is the New Testament or christian church, called the temple. 1 Cor. 3. 16. 17. Know ye not, that ye are the temple of God, that and the spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. Eph. 2. 20. 21. 22. And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together, groweth unto a holy temple in the Lord. In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. The glorious and blessed chief corner stone of this spiritual temple, is also the alone altar, for the christian to offer his prayers, his praise and thanksgiving unto God. Heb.xiii,10.11.12.We have an altar whereof they have no right,to eatwhich serve the tabernacle. For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. Wherefore, Jesus, also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood. suffered without the gate. 13. 14. 15. Let us go forth, therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city; but we seek one to come. By him therefore, let us offer the sacrifice of praise unto God continually, that is the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his name. 2. But the court which is without the temple, leave out, and measure it not, for it is given unto the gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot, forty and two months. Here the church of God is called the holy city, in contradistinction to the great city Babylon. 16.chap.19. And the great city was divided into three parts. 18. chap. 9. 10. And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication, and lived deliciously with her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, standing afar off for the fear of her tor ment, saying, alas, alas! that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour is thy judgment come.

Now this court that is left out, and not measured, according to the divine command, and given to the Gentiles, is not Popery only, but is the whole race of man that are not of the holy city: the church of the living God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Acts, xx, 28. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to the flock over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

"And the holy city shall they tread underfoot forty and two months." This forty two months, according to the Jewish calculation of thirty days to each month is 1260 prophetic days, (or years) which will be noticed more in the next verse.

3. And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophecy a thousand, two hundred and three score days, clothed in sackcloth. This is 1260 years, in which the holy scriptures. 'the two witnesses,' the old and new testaments, shall be dressed in mourning; and the Divine light of life kept from the world, by the power and craft of Antichrist, and the spiritual Babylon; but the length of the time of their mourning is specified. Now let the reader in taking a retrospective view of the past transactions, which have brought the history down to the present time, without a broken link in the grand chain of events, as laid down by the holy prophets; not a par tial, local, or sectional view, but such a comprehensive and enlarged view, as is worthy of Divine inspiration. "The stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.' Surely this is not continental Europe, or any section or nation of men: but has respect to the whole human race. Now the sword of Divine Justice, in the hand of barbarians wounded the western part of the Roman Empire, to death, which gave rise to the ten horns or kings. The little horn came up after them, before whom three of the former horns were plucked up by the roots, he was to be the eighth, and is of the seven.

The horns of the dreadful and terrible beast whose teeth
