proper bounds, making them the incidental and not the principal features of university and intercollegiate life. All that is dishonorable, unsportsmanlike, ungentlemanly or unnecessarily rough in any branch of athletics is particularly and expressly condemned.

To the institutions originally adopting these rules and constituting the "College Conference on Athletics" have recently been added the Universities of Indiana and Iowa, raising the number to nine. It may be said that this organization, and the work it has accomplished in purifying and elevating the standing of college athletics, is the direct outgrowth of the initiative taken by Purdue University.

From this brief report it is evident that Purdue has achieved a respected and prominent position in athletics which is due, we believe, to a continued and consistent effort to encourage those features which are desirable and helpful, and to restrict or eliminate those which are harmful. Under these conditions it is believed that college athletics deserve recognition, and should not be excluded from a proper and reasonable place among the secondary activities of the University.

Respectfully,

WINTHROP E. STONE,

Chairman Faculty Committee on Athletics.
