REPRODUCTIONS OF MURAL DECORATIONS FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, WASHINGTON

"LYRIC POETRY”

Photo-engraving in colors after the original painting by
H. O. Walker

The original of this picture occupies a large tympanum and presents
seven figures. For reasons of space only the central section containing
the five principal figures is given here. The figure standing in the centre
represents Lyric Poetry; while on each side are arrayed the sentiments
called forth by her song. To her left are Pathos, looking upward as if
calling upon Heaven to allay her grief; and Truth, a beautiful nude
woman exhorting the singer to remain within the bounds of reason.
the other side of the panel are Passion, poised in eagerness and rapture;
and Beauty, calm and contented.
