CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES, IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, FORTY-SECOND CONGRESS, FIRST SESSION, April 19, 1871. The following resolution, originating in the House of Representatives this day, has been concurred in by the Senate, viz:

"Resolved, (the Senate concurring,) That twelve thousand five hundred additional copies of the report of the Smithsonian Institution for the year 1870 be printed, twenty-five hundred of which shall be for the use of the Senate, five thousand for the use of the House, and five thousand for the use of the Institution: Provided, That the aggregate number of pages of said report shall not exceed four hundred and fifty, and that there shall be no illustrations except those furnished by the Institution." SIR: In behalf of the Board of Regents, I have the honor to submit to the Congress of the United States the annual report of the operations, expenditures, and condition of the Smithsonian Institution for the year 1870.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION FOR 1870.

This document contains: 1. The programme of organization of the Smithsonian Institution. 2. The annual report of the Secretary, giving an account of the operations and condition of the establishment for the year 1870, with the statistics of collections, exchanges, meteorology, &c. 3. The report of the executive committee, exhibiting the financial affairs of the Institution, including a statement of the Smithson fund, the receipts and expenditures for the year 1870, and the estimates for 1871. 4. The proceedings of the Board of Regents. 5. A general appendix, consisting principally of reports of lectures, translations from foreign journals of articles not generally accessible, but of interest to meteorologists, correspondents of the Institution, teachers, and others interested in the promotion of knowledge.
