For tamponing Kennedy's dark pinus canadensis is preferred by many.

When an internal mucous astringent is indicated, in such cases as cholera infantum, etc., Kennedy's dark pinus canadensis should be given in an alkaline medium.

In Operations.-Cystogen is efficient in prophylaxis, preceding and succeeding operative procedures in the genito-urinary tract, preventing the infection of the cut parts Five-grain doses should be given four times a day, for one or two days preceding an operation, and this treatment continued until the cuts are healed.

The

Thousands of persons make their living through various blackmailing schemes. One of the most common is to threaten physicians, surgeons and dentists with prosecution for alleged malpractice, unless a sum of money, ranging from a few dollars to several thousands, is turned over to them. There is scarcely a member of these professions but has been approached in this way at some time of his career. These schemers often make out a case which sounds so plausible that the accused, while innocent, realizes that if pushed, he would have the trouble of defending himself, and rather than have the expense and annoyance of a law suit be usually pays. Fidelity and Casualty Company issues a policy which protects its holders in such cases. Adventurers are deterred from bringing suit or annoying holders of these policies. Where suit is, however, entered, the company attends to details of preparing evidence, assumes all expense of the defence and pays damages. Many professional men consider this protection more important than fire insurance. This company also issues special forms of accident insurance for professional men. All who have had any dealings with the Fidelity and Casualty Company speak in the highest terms of their prompt action and liberal policy. For further particulars write the Home office, 97 Cedar street, New York.

Persistent Headache Due to Nasal Catarrh.-Nasal catarrh, both acute and chronic, frequently serves as the cause of headache. The pain is generally one of persistent type and classed as congestive. Examination in these cases may show suppuration of accessory sinuses with marked nasal obstruction due to small spura, deviated septum and general hypertrophy. As a rule these obstructions are of little import if the engorged membrane can be readily depleted and the local circulatory system restored. This can readily be accomplished by instructing the patient in the use of glyco-thymoline in a 25 per cent solution (warm) by means of the K. & O. nasal douche. The solution should be applied at least twice daily until the nasal membrane is found to be perfectly normal. The following case occurred in the practice of J. K. Cantrell, M.D., of Alton, Mo., can be cited as typical: I suffered for twenty years from nasal catarrh and at times experienced the most neuralgic pain of a superior orbital character. I commenced the use of glyco-thymoline and was relieved in eight hours of the neuralgic pain, and I am glad to say I am as free from nasal catarrh as an infant. The above disease is the only disease I have had a chance to use glyco-thymoline in, as I used the sample in curing myself.

Modern Therapeutics and Pharmacy.—In speaking of ethical proprietaries, Frederick Hadra, M.D., San Antonio, Texas, says: "I should be sorry, indeed, if the prejudices of any member of this society should so far overcome his better judgment as to banish all or most of these drugs from his practice without investigating their merits. So, if we desire a local antiphlogistic effect, and have to choose between the ancient, unsightly, unhygienic and troublesome flax-seed poultice and the newer proprietary article called antiphlogistine, a physician must needs be prejudiced, indeed, who will prefer the former. It may be a matter of theoretical indifference what preparation we prescribe, but it may be quite a different matter with the patient who has to use it for long periods. Does it not strike you as somewhat incongruous that we alone of all professions and trades should rise up in arms against a co-ordinate branch which is continually striving to assist us in improving our therapeutic weapons? If we take advantage of the opportunity offered to make intelligent selection of such preparations of drugs of reliable concerns as appeal to reason and common sense, those of us who do so will certainly have an advantage over those who do not." As regards the refilling by the druggists of prescriptions of proprietary remedies, he says: "If I am called to treat a sprain of the ankle, and find it necessary to order an antiphlogistic application, it would be just as easy for the patient to send to his druggist daily for more flax-seed meal or iodine, as it would be for him to order more cans of the more cleanly proprietary preparation, antiphlogistine. A tonic or cough medicine, quinine mixture or capsule would share the same fate whether proprietary or extemporaneous. If the intelligent use of the drugs mentioned is not injurious per se, why should we protect the laity against their use any more than against the employment of any other drugs? Would the committee advocate the abandonment of calomel, castor oil, mag. sulph., quinine, flax-seed meal, paregoric, laudanum or carbolic acid because the laity can also go to the drug store and purchase these just as they can cascara preparations, phenacetin, listerine, antiphlogistine, etc."-Texas Medical Journal.

It is a well-known fact that milk is deficient in iron.

"Hemaboloids" supplies the very substances in which milk is so vitally deficient. It is thus indicated in Bright's Disease and other chronic conditions in which milk is depended upon as the nutritive mainstay.

You can buy 3000 units of Stearns' diphtheric antitoxin at drug stores for $3. costs as much as any to produce; it is put up in the simplest, strongest, handiest syringe; but it is sold for less than others because it is not exchangeable.

All you pay over $3 for 3,000 units of exchangeable serum is your tax for the exchange "privilege"; for $3 pays for the serum you get, and the $1.50 or $2 additional is for the wasted serum that someone else has returned.

Therefore, if you expect to return the serum, get an exchangeable kind. But if you expect to use it, buy Stearns'.

Our serums are guaranteed pure and sterile, and to retain their full activity, as labeled, at least eighteen months: this time limit is sanctioned by the highest scientific authority.
