the alloy, at the lower end. When the fluid into which the needle is introduced reaches the necessary temperature (for pasteurization 162° F.) the alloy melts, the spring is released, and the button is thrown up over an inch. So without the aid of an easily breakable thermometer, and the necessity of careful observation the milk is pasteurized with the maximum of accuracy and the minimum of inconvenience.

The Thermoton Co., of 6 Cliff St., New York, has been organized to market the Pastometer in the United States for the conservation of child life. This company will do everything in its power to give physicians an instrument which will prove of material assistance to them and to their infant patients.

The Pastometer retails for $1.00, and with the proper care the instrument will last indefinitely. Any information can be obtained by communicating with the company.

At any rate, the wealth of facts gleaned from practical bedside experience cannot fail to stimulate the interest of every open-minded physician who is striving constantly to accomplish the best possible, results in the best possible way.'

BROMURAL.

Bromural is alphamonobrom-isovalerylurea and forms small, white, almost tasteless needles which are easily soluble in hot water, ether, alcohol and alkalies, but less readily in cold water.

Actions and Uses.-Bromural is in the highest sense appropriate as a pure nerve sedative in all nervous conditions, especially those of a mild character. It represents an innovation in hypnotics, the feature of which is the principle of inducing sleep by the agency of a purely sedative drug. Bromural does not give rise to secondary or after effects whatever, and is very well borne, even by children. It has a power

nervous affections, utero-ovarian displacements, spinal derangements, etc., can be traced directly to the sewing machine, and will gladly welcome any innovation that offers actual relief. Fortunately mechanical genius has at last achieved the object so long sought, and

Standard Central Needle Sewing Machine

affords a gratifying solution of the hygienic problems that have hitherto attended close application to the ordinary sewing machine.

The accompanying pictures tell the story of the infinite superiority of the CENTRAL NEEDLE MACHINE over all others. Its use enables the operator to maintain an upright, comfortable and perfectly natural position all the time. Undue or unnatural strain on the spinal, eye or other muscles is avoided with corresponding prevention of the countless ills that will otherwise inevitably follow.

Every general practitioner will be quick to appreciate the great advantages of the CENTRAL NEEDLE MACHINE, and the interests of the many patients whose difficulties he can trace to the old style machine, will lead him to suggest and recommend with enthusiasm, this vastly improved apparatus.

A little booklet "A Stitch in the Side" has been prepared that cannot fail to prove interesting to every physician who has at heart the hygienic welfare of his female patients. This will be sent free on request.

"SHORT TALKS ON BACTERIAL THERAPY."

Doctor G. H. Sherman of Detroit has started a series of "Short Talks on Bacterial Therapy," the first of which will be found on page 47. The doctor is doing much to popularize amongst the general profession the use of the bacterial vaccines first introduced by Wright of London.

We understand that a book by Doctor Sherman is now in the press to be entitled "Vaccine Therapy in General Practice" and readers of AMERICAN MEDICINE may obtain a copy on request. This book will contain about 140 pages and will be bound in cloth. It will, doubtless, make a valuable addition to your library, and if it stimulates you to get into closer practical touch with Vaccine Therapy it will be a good thing for your practice, for this comparatively new method of treatment is here to stay. It has made good.

DISEASES OF Women.

"In disordered conditions of the liver, indigestion, intestinal atonicity and neurasthenia, the effect of Prunoids is most beneficial. In diseases of women, particularly those occurring at puberty or the climacteric, and in connection with the menstrual function, Prunoids are markedly efficient as a safe and thorough laxative."

up. So without the aid of an easily breakable thermometer and the consequent necessity of careful observation, the milk is pasteurized with the maximum of accuracy and the minimum of inconvenience.

For purposes of pasteurization the milk to be pasteurized should be placed in a large bottle, or preferably in separate nursing bottles, put in a vessel nearly filled with water and set upon the stove. The PASTOMETER must be actually inserted in the milk to be pasteurized during the entire process of heating. If more than one bottle be used, the bottle containing the PASTOMETER will act as a gauge for the others. As soon as the button is thrown upward, showing that the milk has reached the pasteurization temperature, the bottles should be immediately removed from the container in which they have been heated,. carefully wrapped in a heavy woolen cloth, and allowed to remain so wrapped for 30 minutes. Then they should be placed in a deep vessel, in which there is cold running water, for ten minutes, or until the bottles feel as cold as the water. After this they should at once be put into the refrigerator until required for use. When necessary, the milk can be heated for feeding purposes.

Care should be exercised that the bottles are properly corked, so as to exclude all foreign matter.

In removing the PASTOMETER from the bottle the indicating rod should be pressed down, and while so pressed, the lower end of the tube should be dipped in cold. water for a few seconds to allow the alloy to cool. Then the PASTOMETER is again ready for use. The instrument must be kept in an upright position until the alloy solidifies. Within a short time the PASTOMETER will be found in all first-class drug stores. For further information address :
