Air-Cooled Gasoline Motors

WITHIN recent years the advantages of cooling the cylinders of gasoline engines by means of a circulation of air rather than water, has been found so great that at present there are a number of machines being constructed along this line. This kind of machine is readily recognized by the rows of ribs covering the outside of the cylinder, which are used to produce a large radiating surface whereby the heat is more rapidly transferred to the surrounding air.

The Climax machine offers a good illustration of this type of construction. It has the advantage of having but few parts, which permits it being built of comparatively light weight in proportion to its capacity. A 3-horse-power machine. of this kind weighs 30 pounds without the fly wheel; and the latter weighs 30

The books composing the library are intended to be: educational, and progressing from the simple to the more complex subjects; plain books for those already engaged, or soon to be, in the practical application of the theory of mechanics; each volume is complete in itself, while progressive in the series. The books are each supplied with a ready reference index, which enables the quick use of their contents.

The volumes are strongly and handsomely bound in black cloth, with titles and edges in gold; they contain 1,204 pages, 1,244 illustrations, many of which are full pages, with 3,000 ready references; they are printed on fine surface paper with large, clear type. Each book stands 81⁄2 inches in height, and the three, packed for shipment, weigh over 7% lbs. No works of equal value have ever been offered to the machinists' and allied trades, and no one, from the superintendent and owner to the apprentice, can afford considering the price and terms, to be without them.

pounds, making a total of only 60 pounds for the complete machine.

A very good practice in connection with the building of these machines is that the makers keep an engine running continually at the factory in order that any weak points which may develop can be remedied. The cylinders of the 3-horse-power machines have a 3-inch bore, a 31⁄2-inch stroke, and they run at a speed of 2,000 revolutions per minute.

frame of good hardwood, and had a blacksmith make the brace rods, and bought a II-16-in. steel shaft, 4 feet long, for $1. I had a machinist turn it down, and put on collar for saw belt, and also cut threads for a nut to attach saw. This cost $2.50. From an old thresher-man I secured a pair of boxes, and also 16 feet of old belting; and out of a junk pile took a 6-in. pulley for the belt, at a total cost of $5.50.

I bought a 30-in. saw for $8.50, and when complete I ran the saw with an old eight horse-power, which cost $25. I then took a partner, and we got 75 cents per hour for cutting wood. I cut my own supply in a short while, and later was able to cut considerable wood for my neighbors.-A THRIFTY FARMER.

a number of changes in their regrinding valves, which, however, are not radical, as this type of valve has been in use for half a century and has proved itself to be of satisfactory design. In the new design, the weight of the valve has been increased, not because the thickness of the belt was too light, but as an additional precaution against rough handling; and the shape has also been altered, to improve its appearance, and this increases the area through the valve passage. The pipe threads have been made considerably longer, to insure stronger joints between the pipe and the valve; and all sizes of these valves are now provided with lock

nuts on the hand wheels, which facilitate the taking apart and the assembling of the valve for repairs. An important feature of these valves is that, beside their design, which permits of considerable regrinding, they can be packed under pressure when open or closed.

Self-Packing Radiator Valves THE accompanying illustration shows a new type of valve recently brought out by the Crane Company, which contains some novel features. By a special device placed in the stuffing boxes of these valves, the packing is automatically kept tight; and it will last for years without renewal.

This device consists of a vulcanized

washer located in the top of the stuffing box, and held in position by a compression spring which compensates for the wear on the washer. This construction precludes the possibility of the valves
