The commerce of this river has been reported under the head of Chicago Harbor, with the commerce of which it is naturally a part.

At the beginning of the year no work was in progress.

CONTRACTS LET DURING YEAR.

Riprap protection (maintenance).-Under an emergency contract, dated September 22, 1915, 67 tons of riprap stone were furnished and placed along the lake face of the breakwater, all work being completed September 24, 1915. Expenditures during the year $328.60.1 Cruiser Chicago." (See Chicago Harbor report.) Expenditures during the year, $375.31.

MISCELLANEOUS WORK.

Replacing decking on breakwater (maintenance).-Between the 16th and 20th of May, 1916, 84 pieces of decking that had been torn off of the breakwater in scattered places by severe storms were replaced by hired labor, with decking that had been left from previous works. Spikes and washers were purchased under informal proposals. The total cost of this work was $352.26.

Repairing building (maintenance).-The building on the United States reservation used as an office, boat and storehouse was thor

oughly overhauled and repaired by hired labor. Expenditures during the year, $332.46.

Permits.-Five permits were issued and two extended during the year, and the work under these and permits previously granted was inspected. Expenditures during the year, $138.24.

Property and plant was cared for, one rowboat built (hired labor), and general supervision exercised. Expenditures during the year, $1,326.74.

Local surveys were made as follows:

(a) Sounding along the breakwater to ascertain condition of riprap and to determine the amount of riprap required to replace the structure in a safe condition.

(b) Soundings taken in the harbor at entrance to and between the piers to determine amount of dredging required.

Expenditures during the year, $823.02.

NOTE. The tonnage figures were furnished by the collector of customs. The valuations were based on unit prices furnished by the board of trade and business firms, compiled in the district office and considered reasonably accurate.

4. CALUMET RIVER, ILL. AND IND.

A map showing the various works on this river is to be found opposite page 2932, Annual Report for 1914.

At the beginning of the year work was in progress under contract for dredging, and subsequent work under it was as follows:

CONTRACT IN FORCE JULY 1, 1915.

Dredging (new work and maintenance).-Work under the contract dated June 11, 1914, was continued and 18,693.7 cubic yards of material (including bowlders) was removed from the rock section (between One hundred and eleventh and One hundred and fourteenth Streets) to 21 feet depth. Contract was completed August 7, 1915. Expenditures during the year $6,804.36, of which $3,000 was retained percentages on payments made during previous year. Total cost of work under contract $49,365.60.

CONTRACTS LET DURING YEAR.

Dredging (new work and maintenance).-Under date of August 27, 1915, a contract was entered into with the Fitz Simons & Connell Dredge & Dock Co., of Chicago, Ill., for dredging the river channel to full width of 200 feet and 21 feet depth at three places, to wit: The main channel from the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railroad bridge to One hundred and sixth Street (maintenance); between One hundred and sixth Street and the lower end of the rock section (maintenance); below Turning Basin No. 5, between a point 400 feet below the turning basin and a point about 900 feet below the Nickel Plate Railroad bridge (new work); and also dredging a portion of Turning Basin No. 1 where shoaling had occurred (maintenance). Work under this contract commenced August 30, 1915, and was completed May 17, 1916, between which dates 237,943 cubic yards of material was removed. Expenditures during the year, $38,664. Total cost, $38,664.

Removing wreck (maintenance).-Under date of September 3, 1915, an emergency contract was entered into with the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co., of Chicago, Ill., for the removal of the hulk of an old vessel from the south side of the west abutment of Ninetyfifth Street Bridge, where it had become an obstruction to navigation. This work was done on September 18, 1915. Total cost of this work, $755.60.

Removing rock (maintenance).—Several small points of rock having been found to project above the depth of 21 feet at Chicago City Datum in the rock section between One hundred and eleventh and One hundred and fourteenth Streets, an informal agreement (after securing bids) was entered into October 21, 1915, with the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co., of Chicago, Ill., for hire of dredge and attendant plant at $20 per hour, and diver and outfit (including explosives) at $8.50 per hour for their removal. This work was done between November 2 and 27, 1915, at a total cost of $1,329.31.

Dredging (maintenance).-Under date of June 12, 1916, a contract was entered into with the Fitz Simons & Connell Dredge & Dock Co., of Chicago, Ill., for dredging to project depth (21 feet), and a width of 160 feet, the channel from the southerly limit of the rock section near One hundred and fourteenth Street to south side of One hundred and twenty-second Street, a distance of about 5,680 feet. Work was commenced on June 17, 1916, and 44,083 cubic

yards of material was removed. Contract 71 per cent completed. Expenditures during the year, $215.20.

Cruiser Chicago.-(See Chicago Harbor report.) Expenditures during the year, $1,368.81.

MISCELLANEOUS WORK.

Permits.-Fourteen permits for bridges, dredging, etc., were issued and one extended during the year, and work under these and other permits in force inspected. Expenditures during the year, $578.99. Local surveys were made as follows:

(a) Sweeping over the rock section at One hundred and tenth Street.

(b) Soundings taken before dredging from One hundred and sixth to One hundred and twenty-second Streets, and from Torrence Avenue to Turning Basin No. 5.

(c) Soundings taken after dredging from the harbor to One hundred and tenth Street, and from Torrence Avenue to Turning Basin No. 5.

(d) For establishing bench marks from harbor to One hundred and twelfth Street.

(e) For location of railroad bridges at Ninety-seventh Street.

Expenditures during the year, $1,855.77.
