inner end of the sheet-pile wing. The sum of $1,188.11 was expended for this work.

Dredging by the Meade November 23 to December 15, 1915, removed 19,313 cubic yards, restoring the project depth in the channel between the inside piers and in the basin. Soundings of May 3-13, 1916, showed available depths below low water of 20 feet in the basin between the entrance to the breakwaters, and the entrance to the inside piers, and 17.5 feet in the channel between the piers. Dredging by the Meade June 2-6, 1916, restored the project depth between the piers and widened the channel in the basin, removing 4,757 cubic yards. During the fiscal year the Meade removed a total of 24,070 cubic yards, the expenditures for which were $4,704.41.

The sum of $2,028.81 was expended for purchase and maintenance of U. S. survey and inspection steamer Hancock. The cost of the above work is charged to maintenance.

The Pere Marquette Railroad Co. operates a line of car ferries from Ludington to Milwaukee, Manitowoc, and Kewaunee during the entire year.

The Pere Marquette Line Steamers operates a translake line of steamers between Ludington and Milwaukee, and a coastwise line between Pentwater, Ludington, Manistee, Portage Lake, Arcadia, and Frankfort during the navigation season.

The Northern Michigan Transportation Co. operates a regular line of steamers from Chicago to Ludington, Manistee, Portage Lake, Frankfort, Charlevoix, and Petoskey during the navigation season.

In addition to the above-named vessel lines, a large number of bulk-freight carriers enter and leave this port during the navigation season, carrying principally coal, lumber, and salt.

The above receipts do not include 353 tons of stone for use in harbor improvement carried on Government.

The above large increase is accounted for by an increase in the receipts of coal, grain, lumber and products, and in the shipments of salt and coal.

All freight values via car ferry, and all miscellaneous freight values other than car ferry are assume only approximate. Average haul or distance freight was carried and rate per ton-mile not known.

10. MANISTEE HARBOR, MICH.

Under contract of October 7, 1912, Greiling Bros. Co., contrac for the construction of 700 linear feet of breakwater, continued erations completing the contract September 30, 1915. The followi work was done: The foundation for crib 7 was completed; crik and crib 7, 20.5 feet and 18.5 feet deep, respectively, and each feet long and 30 feet wide, were sunk and filled with stone; the sup structure, 1 foot high on the lake side and 5 feet high on the harl side, was completed, filled with stone, and decked. In addition the contract proper, the site for crib 8 was dredged, the foundati piles driven and cut off, and the site protected with a covering small stone, thus permitting the practical completion of the ripr for crib 7. The total stone used for the fiscal year was 8,239.5 to of 10 to 200 pound stone, 3,886.9 tons of 50 to 1,000 pound sto and 4,378.7 tons of 3 to 8 ton stone. The expenditures under t contract were $107,968.19, all for new construction.

John Ginzel, contractor for constructing the remaining 600 f of the breakwater with its shore connection and the removal of t outer 450 feet of the south pier, began operations May 25, 19 and did the following work: The foundation for crib 8, prepar
