In addition to the above, there were 10 rafts of logs towed into this harbor. The Pere Marquette Line Steamers operates one coastwise steamer regularly during the summer months between Ludington, Manistee, Portage Lake, Arcadia, and Frankfort; all passengers carried reported by this line.

In addition to the Pere Marquette Line Steamers there were several bulkfreight boats which carried lumber and wood from this harbor.

This large decrease is accounted for entirely by a decrease in the shipment of lumber, and in the receipt of logs.

Miscellaneous freight values are assumed and only approximate.

Average haul or distance freight was carried and rate per ton-mile, not known.

13. FRANKFORT HARBOR, MICH.

Dredging by the Meade September 8-15, 1915, removed 12,404 cubic yards from the entrance bar in Lake Michigan and 9,586 cubic yards from the channel between the piers, a total of 21,990 cubic yards. This dredging restored project depths. On account of a request from the Ann Arbor Railroad Co. for dredging to remove shoals along the channel faces of the two revetments between the inner end of the piers and the Lake Michigan shore lines, soundings were made January 5, 1916, which showed a width of 100 feet or more in this portion of the channel with the project depth. Severe ice conditions prevented any dredging by the Meade. Soundings of May 23-25, 1916, showed a least depth below low water of 17.9 feet on the entrance bar in Lake Michigan, and an available depth of 20 feet below low water between the piers, but not for the entire project width. The shoals reported in January had not increased and had caused no trouble to vessels using the harbor. Dredging by the Meade June 17-30, 1916, removed 23,292 cubic yards from the entrance bar in Lake Michigan, and 18,223 cubic yards from the channel between the piers, a total of 41,515 cubic yards, restoring the project depth. During the fiscal year the Meade dredged a total of 63,505 cubic yards, the expenditures for which were $3,633.95.

The sum of $1,727.21 was expended for maintenance and operation of U. S. survey and inspection steamer Hancock. All of the above work is charged to maintenance.

The above passenger arrivals and departures do not include those of the Ann Arbor Railroad Co. car ferries. This company kept no record of passengers carried on their car ferries and ceased carrying them entirely on November 13, 1915.

The Ann Arbor Railroad Co. operates a regular line of car ferries from Frankfort to Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Menominee, and Manistique.

The Northern Michigan Transportation Co. operates a line of steamers from Chicago to Ludington, Manistee, Portage Lake, and Frankfort, making triweekly trips to Frankfort during the navigation season.

The Pere Marquette Line Steamers operates a line of steamers between Pentwater, Ludington, Manistee, Portage Lake, Arcadia, and Frankfort, making triweekly trips to Frankfort during the navigation season.

14. CHARLEVOIX HARBOR, MICH.

Dredging by the Meade, September 16-21, 1915, removed 5,131 cubic yards from the entrance bar in Lake Michigan, 1,002 cubic yards from the lower channel (between Lake Michigan and Round Lake), and 4,549 cubic yards from the upper channel (between Round Lake and Pine Lake), a total of 10,682 cubic yards, at a cost of $1,504.63. This dredging widened the channel of project depth at various places. Soundings of May 26-31, 1916, showed that the project depth was available in all parts of the harbor. A small amount of dredging is needed on the entrance bar in Lake Michigan to provide safe depths in rough weather.

A survey as a basis for a new map was made, November 5-16, 1915, of both the lower and upper channels. No soundings were made. The cost of this survey was $270.72. The sum of $1,501.99 was expended for purchase and maintenance of U. S. survey and inspection steamer Hancock. All of the above expenditures were for mainte
