contract was entered into with the Miami Quarry Co., of Portland, Oreg., for this work. Operations during the fiscal year have been carried on thereunder.

The contractors were engaged in preliminary operations during August and September at the jetties and at the Government quarry at Point Terrace where stone is obtained. On October 16, 1915, the first stone under this contract was placed in the north jetty.

North jetty. The work done on this jetty consisted of minor repairs to the old receiving wharf and extensive repairs to the old tramway to and including bent No. 500, and the tramway extension from bent 500 to and including bent 522, a total distance of 330 feet, the project end of the jetty. It also consisted of the farther enrockment of the old jetty from bent 290 to and including bent 500, and partial enrockment from bent 500 to and including bent 522. Tramway repairs consisted of renewing piles, stringers, and caps, relaying rails, and constructing five gridirons. The tramway extension to bent 522 was completed early in May, 1916. The depth at the project end was 19 feet at mean lower low water. Pile penetrations were 20 to 22 feet. The enrockment has been carried to and including bent 522. It is about completed to bent 490. From bent 490 to and including bent 495 it is well above mean lower low water, and from bent 495 to bent 520 it shows up above water at low tide. It is estimated that about 36,000 tons of stone will be required to complete the north jetty in order to provide for scour and the severe storms and heavy seas to which the outer end will be subjected.

South jetty. The old receiving wharf was repaired and enlarged, and the old jetty tramway repaired to bent 70, and 619 tons of small stone dumped along channel piles of receiving wharf and adjacent tramway to bent 10 in order to protect them from scour. Most of the stringers have been renewed, two gridirons repaired and six new ones constructed, and it is believed the tramway will be in condition for the contractors to begin active jetty construction by August 15, 1916.

The following material has been placed in the north and south jetties by the contractors.

The total expenditure for the fiscal year was $62,958.70, of which $5,000 was for maintenance.

5. YAQUINA RIVER, OREG.

The work of maintaining the dredged channel between Toledo on Depot Slough and deep water near Oysterville was commenced January 3, 1916, by hired labor and the use of a bucket dredge owned by the port of Toledo. A survey made previously to beginning dredging showed the controlling depth of 10 feet in the channel had been well maintained, although some narrowing of the channel had occurred, especially in Depot Slough. The project channel in Depot Slough from the Moore Lumber Co.'s wharf at Toledo to a point. about 200 feet below the mouth of the slough, a distance of about 2,100 feet, was restored to the project depth and width by the removal of 14,050 cubic yards of material, which was deposited on the adjacent banks, at a total cost of $2,740.04. Operations ceased April 20, 1916, the available funds having been exhausted. The sum of $27.94 was expended for new work performed the previous year.

Much delay was caused by the poor condition of the port's plant, which was not well adapted for this work on account of its inability to deposit the dredged material a sufficient distance from the channel. The work has resulted in providing a navigable channel 150 feet wide (200 feet wide at the curves) and 10 feet deep at mean lower low water from deep water in the bay near Oysterville to the upper end of the project on Depot Slough, a distance of 6 miles.
