7. NEHALEM BAY, OREG.

The south jetty was finished on December 31, 1915. During the year 495 feet of tramway was constructed and 68,655 tons of rock was placed in the enrockment. The rock was furnished by the Miami Quarry Co., under contract dated November 6, 1913. Since completion the enrockment for a distance of 150 feet from the outer end of the jetty has subsided to low-tide level. The remainder of the enrockment, which was built up to high-tide level, has not appreciably subsided. Expended for this work, $135,302.27.

On each side of the bay a 40 by 80 foot wharf, equipped with a derrick, was constructed. Under date of April 11, 1915, a contract was entered into with Robert Wakefield, of Portland, Oreg., for furnishing 100,000 short tons of rock for the north jetty. After the completion of the south jetty the Government plant was transferred to the north side of the bay, and water supply, etc., was installed for the construction of the north jetty. By the close of the year 675 feet (to bent No. 45) of the pile tramway approach from the north receiving wharf to the shore end of the north jetty had been constructed. The contractor has opened a quarry of heavy igneous rock on the south fork of the Nehalem River, 17 miles from the jetty, and proposes to transport the stone on flat cars over the Southern Pacific Railroad to a wharf on the south side of bay and transfer across the bay on scows, making delivery on the Government cars on the north side of the bay. Expended for work on north jetty, $15,031.38.

The completion of the south jetty has fixed the channel across the bar, and the survey of June 30, 1916, shows a least depth of 12 feet at mean lower low water across the bar in a well-defined channel about 200 feet in width.

Report on preliminary examination of Nehalem Bay and Nehalem River, Oreg., from the entrance of Nehalem Bay to the city of Nehalem, with a view to the improvement of the same in cooperation with local interests, was submitted August 30, 1915, and resulted in allotment of $1,100 for a survey. This survey was completed December 9, 1915, and report and estimate thereon is expected to be submitted at an early date.
