SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT. PART I. STATE OF NEW YORK: INSURANCE DEPARTMENT, ALBANY, April 1, 1882. To the Hon. the Legislature of the State of New York: } I have the honor to present herewith Part First of the Twenty-third Annual Report of the Insurance Department of the State of New York. At the end of the year 1881 there were eighty-four (84) Fire and Marine Insurance Companies organized under the laws of this State, and authorized to do business therein, of which seventy-one (71) were Joint-Stock Fire; seven (7) were Mutual Fire; two (2) were Joint-Stock Marine, and four (4) were Mutual Marine Insurance Companies. The following tables show the Fire and Marine Companies which have made additions to their capital, the amount so added, and the date of the increase; companies which have extended their charters; companies which have reduced their number of directors; companies which have deposited securities for creation of Safety Fund; companies which have discontinued business, or merged in other companies; companies which have made up an impairment of their capital, with the amount and percentage of such impairment, during the year 1881, and down to the date of this Report. Additions to Capital by New York Fire and Fire-Marine Insurance Companies during 1881, and to April 1, 1882. New York Fire Insurance Companies that have extended their Charters during the period from January 1, 1881, to April 1, 1882. New York Joint-Stock, Fire and Fire-Marine Insurance Companies that have reduced their number of Directors, under provisions of chapter 183, Laws of 1877, during 1881, and to April 1, 1882. New York Joint-Stock Fire and Fire Marine Insurance Companies that have deposited securities in this Department April 1, 1882, in pursuance of chapter 189, Laws of 1874, as amended by chapter 282, Laws of 1878, entitled "An act to provide security against extraordinary conflagrations, and for the creation of safety funds by Fire Insurance Companies." New York Joint-Stock Fire Insurance Companies that have merged under the provisions of chapter 98 of the Laws of 1878. New York Joint-Stock Fire Insurance Companies that have been called upon to make up impairment of capital during 1881, and to April 1, 1882. New York Joint-Stock Fire and Fire-Marine Insurance Companies that have discontinued business during January 1, 1881, to April 1, 1882. COMPANIES OF OTHER STATES AND COUNTRIES. At the close of 1881, there were allowed to transact business in this State ninety-four (94) Fire, Fire-Marine and Marine Insurance Companies, organized under the laws of other States and countries, viz.: Fifty-five (55) Joint-Stock Fire, one (1) Mutual Fire, two (2) Joint-Stock Marine, and one (1) Mutual Marine of other States, and twenty-five (25) Joint-Stock Fire, and ten (10) Joint-Stock Marine of other countries. The following tables show the names of such companies admitted to transact business in this State during the year ending with December 31, 1881, and down to the date of this report, the date of their admission, their location and capital; the companies which have not renewed their certificates of authority for the year 1882, with their location and capital; and a list of the attorneys resident in this State, whose appointments are duly filed in this Department according to law, upon whom process can be served by citizens of this State having demands against such companies of other States and countries.
