A Guide to Orchestral Music : The Handbook for Non-Musicians: The Handbook for Non-Musicians

Front Cover
Oxford University Press, USA, 1980 M05 29 - 588 pages
Relaxed and accessible in style, this authoritative guide is the first symphony handbook for non-musicians. The book begins with a general introduction to the symphony and short pieces on the orchestra and musical styles. Mordden goes on to describe, chronologically, over 700 pieces--from Vivaldi to twentieth-century composers. Further aids to the reader include two lists of repertory builders and a glossary of musical terms. Easy and pleasurable to read...a genuinely useful guide for the music lover who has not had a musical education but loves concert music.--John Barkham Reviews

I purchased this book back in the 1980s when it was first published. At the time, I was a non-musician wanting to become knowledgable about orchestral music. This book was the first such resource I bought, but by no means the only one. Mordden's book has proven to be IMMENSELY useful, and has served me better than all the others. Several months ago, I sent it off with my daughter, when she left for music school. This book may have been published years ago, but the information is timeless. Its only flaw is that it is not longer, with more on Baroque music. By any measure, this is a superb book, especially for non-musicians!
