A SILVER NECKTIE.

Gold Glove; Silver Tie THE 'HE latest novelty in the line of the

goldsmith's art is a golden glove covered with precious stones, which is put on the left hand by its fortunate owner. The possessor of such a glove can be seen in the international fashionable watering places and also in the elegant sections of Paris. The expense involved in the mak

ing of such a glove is estimated as being from $1,100 to $2,400.

A neck-tie made of silver threads, the invention of a Wiesbaden jeweler, is less expensive than the glove just described. These neck-ties are considered very pretty, especially by those who can afford to spend the necessary amount thereon. They cost $350.

To Build Larger Destroyers

PLANS and specifications have recently been completed by the navy department for five new torpedo-boat destroyers authorized by the last congress. These new torpedo-boat destroyers will be of about twenty-eight knots speed and 700 tons displacement. The plans call for vessels considerably larger than those of similar type now in service. The largest of the present destroyers displaces but 433 tons, and is 248 feet long. Bidders will be given the privilege of submitting estimates on boats with oil-burning apparatus for generating steam, reand internal combustion engines. These ciprocating and turbine steam engines, items were never before included in bids for boats of this class, but owing to the successful results from oil burning engines it is probable that within the near future all the new vessels will be equipped with such apparatus.

Great care is being taken by the navy department to send out circulars and

other information concerning destroyers and new battleships only to such concerns as have the facilities for filling contracts for the vessels if awarded to them. This secrecy is in accordance with Secretary Metcalfe's recent orders and is maintained for the purpose of preventing detailed information of new naval construction falling into the hands of foreign governments always on the lookout to obtain such news.
