NOTICE.

The original English Edition of the First Series of ESSAYS: SCIENTIFIC, POLITICAL, AND SPECULATIVE, is out of print. As there continues to be a demand for the work, but a demand not great enough to repay the cost of printing a second English Edition, the Author has thought it best to meet the requirement, as far as it can be done, by importing a supply of the American reprint. The requirement, however, cannot thus be fully met; since the American editor has re-grouped the Essays in such a way that neither volume corresponds in its contents to the First or the Second Series as issued here. Besides differing in being a combination of the two series re-arranged, this American edition also differs in containing an additional Essay, more recent than the rest, entitled "Mill versus Hamilton-the Test of Truth.”

May, 1868.
