Tous les articles préliminaires du mariage ayant été convenus, le duc de Bellegarde, grand-écuyer de France, porteur de la procuration du roi pour le grand-duc, arriva à Florence, et y fit son entrée avec quarante gentilshommes français. Le 5 octobre 1600, le grand-duc Ferdinand, oncle de Marie de Médicis, épousa sa nièce pour Henri IV. Le cardinal Aldobrandini, neveu et légat du pape Clément VIII, donna la bénédic tion nuptiale dans l'église de Sainte-Marie del Fiore, en présence de MM. de Bellegarde, de Sillery et du cardinal d'Ossat, qui avaient été les négociateurs pour ce mariage. La duchesse de Mantoue et la grande- duchesse de Florence accompagnent la reine. Toutes les figures de ce tableau sont des portraits, mais Rubens a cependant voulu le rendre encore allégorique, en plaçant l'Hyménée derrière la reine et portant son manteau. Cette princesse est vêtue d'une robe blanche parsemée de fleurs d'or d'un très bel effet. La dot de la princesse fut de quatre millions et demi de francs, indépendamment de beaucoup de pierreries et de bijoux d'un grand prix. : Huit jours après son mariage, elle quitta Florence et vint s'embarquer à Livourne le cortége se composait de quinze, galères. All the preliminary articles of the alliance having been setted, the duke de Bellegarde, grand equerry of France, charged with a letter of attorney from the king to the grand-duke, arrived at Florence, and made his public entry there, with forty french gentlemen. The grand-duke Ferdinand, uncle of Marie de Médicis, espoused his niece, acting as a proxy for Henri IV, on the 5 october 1600. Cardinal Aldobrandino, the nephew of Clement VIII and his legate, gave the nuptial benediction in the church of Santa-Maria del Fiore, in the presence of MM. de Bellegarde, de Sillery and cardinal d'Ossat, who were the negotiatiors of the marriage. The dutchess of Mantua and the grand-dutchess of Florence attended on the queen. The figures in this picture are portraits, but Rubens has notwithstanding rendered the subject allegorical, by placing Hymen behind the queen, carrying her mantle. The queen is clothed in a white robe sprinkled with golden flowers, which produces a beautiful effect. The dowry of this princess was four millions and a half of francs, independently of numerous jewels and ornaments of great price. Eight days after this ceremony, she quitted Florence and embarked at Leghorn; her train consisted of fifteen galleys.
