LE TEMPS DÉCOUVRANT LA VÉRITÉ. En terminant l'histoire de Marie de Médicis lors de la réconciliation de cette princesse avec son fils, Rubens a cru convenable de faire sentir que la mésintelligence qui avait paru régner entre eux n'avait pu exister réellement, et que le temps en découvrant la vérité, avait donné à leurs majestés l'occasion de reconnaître la fausseté des rapports qui avaient été cause de leur éloignement. Dans le haut du tableau on voit le roi et la reine soutenant un médaillon représentant deux mains l'une dans l'autre, et surmontées d'un cœur. Par cet emblème, le peintre a voulu faire sentir la bonne foi et la tendresse qui avaient présidé au traité de réconciliation. La figure du Temps et celle de la Vérité se font remarquer par une couleur vigoureuse et vraie, ainsi que par un dessin moins outré que ne l'est ordinairement celui de Rubens. In finishing the history of Marie de Médicis, after the reconciliation of that princess with her son, Rubens has thought proper to make it apparent, that the misunderstanding, which appears to have reigned between them, had never truly any existence, and that time discovering truth, had given their majesties the opportunity of learning the falsity of reports, which had been the cause of their estrangement. At the top of the picture, the king and queen are seen supporting a medallion, on which, two hands clasped together, surmounted with a heart are represented. By this emblem the painter alludes to the good faith and affection, which presided at their treaty of reconciliation. The figure of Time and that of Truth are remarkable for their vigour and truth of colouring, as well as for drawing, less extravagant, than is the drawing of Rubens in general.
