John xv, 22-27; xvi, 1–21.

'spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin. He that hateth me hateth my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written 5 in their law, They hated me without a cause, But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. 10 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them.

*And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

15

But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; 20 It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me ; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 25 of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify 30 me; for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

A little while, and ye shall not see me and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. Then said some of his 35 disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me and, Because I go to the Father? They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do 40 ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her 45 hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world,

John xvi, 22-33; xvii, 1-14.

And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall 5 receive, that your joy may be full. These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have 10 loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father,

'His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, 15 and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. These things I have spoken unto you, 20 that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: as thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give 25 eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the 30 world was. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and 35 have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come 40 to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things 45 I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because

they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the 5 world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 10 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that 15 they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in 20 them, and I in them.

'Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. But Peter answered and said unto him, 25 Although all shall be offended 'because of thee, yet will I never be of fended. And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, that this night before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. But 1Peter said unto 30 him, he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, 'though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said all the disciples.

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, 35 and his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

1Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, 'while I go and pray yonder.

40

2And he taketh with him, 'he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, James and John, and began to be sore amazed, 'to be sorrowful, and to be very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation, 'tarry ye here, 45 and watch with me.

1And he went a little farther, 'forward, and he was withdrawn from

3them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, 'and fell on his face, 'on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee, 'O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me, 3Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, 5 but thine be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he 10 found them sleeping for sorrow, and said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? 'what, 'couldest not thou watch, 'could ye not watch with me one hour? 2Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, 'is willing, but the flesh is weak.

And again he went away, 'the second time, and prayed, and spake the same words, 'saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

2And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.

1And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

20

Then cometh he to his disciples the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, 'behold, the hour is at hand, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the 25 hands of sinners. Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

And immediately, while he yet spake, 'lo, Judas, one of the twelve, 'having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons, 1and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests 30 2and the scribes and the elders 'of the people. And he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.

3

'Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: 'take him, 'hold him fast, and lead him 35 away safely.

40

1And forthwith he came to Jesus; and as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master, 'hail, master; and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? *Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he 45 them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let

'these go their way: that the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

'Then came they, and laid their hands on 'Jesus, and took him. 3When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? 1And, behold, one of 5 them which were with Jesus, that stood by, Simon Peter having a sword, 'stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

10

1Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword 1into his place, *into the sheath: 'for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. 1The cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? 'Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then 15 shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be.

Then Jesus, 'in that same hour, answered and said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, 'to the multitudes, 3which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves 1for to take me? I was daily, 'I sat daily with you teaching 20 in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me, 3when I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness, the scriptures must be fulfilled, 'but all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. 1Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him: and he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

25

“Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, and led him away to Annas first; for he was father in 30 law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

Then 'they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house, 'to Caiaphas the high priest, where 35 2with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

4And Simon Peter followed Jesus 1afar off unto the high priest's palace; and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. 40 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter, and Peter 'went in 'even into the palace of the high priest.

Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou 45 also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.

And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of
