Matt. xxvi, 31-39. Mark xiv, 29–35. Luke xxii, 40, 41. John xvii, 14—26; xviii, 1, 2.

pray not

*they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thay truth : thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the 5 world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word ; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us : that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 10 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one : I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one ; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that 15 they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me : for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto their thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in 20 them, and I in them.

Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. ?But Peter answered and said unto him, 25 Although all shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. "Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, that this night before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. But 'Peter said unto 30 him, he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, 'though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee, ’I will not deny thee in any wise. "Likewise also said all the disciples.

*When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, 35 and his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

1Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, ’and they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, 'while I go and pray yonder.

2 And he taketh with hiin, 'he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, ?James and John, and began to be sore amazed, 'to be sorrowful, ’and to be very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation, 'tarry ye here, 45 and watch with me.

And he went a little farther, 'forward, and he was withdrawn from

3them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, 'and fell on his face, ’on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee, 'O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me, 'Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, 5 but thine be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he 10 found them sleeping for sorrow, and said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation, 'and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? 'what, 'couldest not thou watch, 'could ye not watch with me one hour ? ?Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, 'is willing, but the flesh is weak.

?And again he went away, 'the second time, and prayed, ’and spake the same words, 'saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

2And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.

And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words,

Then cometh he to his disciples 'the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, 'behold, the hour is at hand, the hour is come ; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the 25 hands of sinners. Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

And immediately, while he yet spake, 'lo, Judas, one of the twelve, “having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons, 'and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests 30 and the scribes and the elders 'of the people. And he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.

Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that saine is he: 'take him, 'hold him fast, "and lead him 35 away safely.

*Ånd forthwith he came to Jesus; ?and as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master, 'hail, master; and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come ? 8Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss ?

*Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he 45 them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let

*these go their way: that the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

Then came they, and laid their hands on "Jesus, and took him.

3 When they which were bout him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword ? And, behold, one of 5 them which were with Jesus, "that stood by, *Simon Peter having a sword, 'stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, 'and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. *And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

10 Then said Jesus unto “Peter, Put up thy sword 'into his place, 'into the sheath: 'for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. The cup which

my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it ? "Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then 15 shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be.

3Then Jesus, 'in that same hour, answered and said unto 3the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, 'to the multitudes, 3which were come to him, Be ve come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves 'for to take me? I was daily, 'I sat daily with you teaching 20 in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me, 'when I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness, the scriptures must be fulfilled, but all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

25 ?And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him : and he left the linen cloth, and fled from then naked.

*Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, and led him away to Annas first ; for he was father in 30 law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

Then they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away, sand brought him into the high priest's house, 'to Caiaphas the high priest, where 35 with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

4 And Simon Peter followed Jesus 'afar off unto the high priest's palace ; 4and so did another disciple : that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. 40 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter, ’and Peter 'went in ’even into the palace of the high priest.

*Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou 45 also one of this man's disciples ? He saith, I am not.

And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of

*coals ; for it was cold : and they warmed themselves : and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

*The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world ; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in 5 secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest

Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the 10 evil : but if well, why sinitest thou me? Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

*And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them, 'with the servants, to see the end, 'and 15 warmed himself at the fire.

And now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, 'sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; 'but found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. ? For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together. At the last 20 came, athere arose certain, 'two false witnesses, ?and bare false witness against him, saying, 'This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. ?We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. But neither so did their witness agree together, 25

"And the high priest arose, and 'stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace, ’and answered nothing.

2 Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed ? 'I adjure thee by the living God, that 30 thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. ?And Jesus said 'unto him, ?I am: and hereafter 'ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blas. phemy; what further need have we of witnesses ? behold, now ye have 35 heard his blasphemy. What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.

2 And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.

3And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. And some began to spit on him, 'in his face, ’and to cover his face, 'and when 40 they had blindfolded him, to buffet him ; 'and others smote him, ?and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, 'Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee? And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.

Now Peter sat without in the palace, 'and as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh 'a damsel, 'a certain maid, 'came unto him,

Matt. xxvi, 69—75; xxvii, 1–5. Mark xiv, 66—72; xv, 1. Luke xxii, 56–62, 66—71;

xxiii, 1. John xviii, 26, 27.

Pone of the maids of the high priest, and beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and 'when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth, 'of Galilee, 'this man was also with him. But he denied Phim 'before them all, saying, I know not, ?neither understand I what 5 thou sayest, 'woman, I know him not. ?And he went out into the porch ; and the cock crew.

And when he was gone out into the porch, another {maid saw him again, and began to say to them 'that were there, 'that stood by, this is one of them, 'this fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth ; Safter a 10 little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them, and Peter said, Man, I am not, 'and again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. And after a while, ’a little after, about the space of one hour after, another confidently affirmed, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them : for thou art a Galilæan, 15 and thy speech agreeth thereto, 'for thy speech bewrayeth thee, %of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilæan. “One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him ? Peter then denied again, Rand Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest, then began 20 he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man, 'I know not this man of whom ye speak. And immediately, 'while he yet spake, *the cocķ crew, the second time the cock crew.

3And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter 'called to mind, øremembered the word of the Lord "Jesus, the word that Je- 25 sus had said unto him, "Before the cock crow, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, ?and when he thought thereon, lie wept, and wept bitterly.

2 And straightway in the morning, 'when the morning was come, Sas soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and 30 the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe : and if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he 35 said unto them, Ye say that I am. And they said, What need we any further witness ? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

And all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, 2the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, 'to put him to death: and when 40 they had bound him, Øthe whole multitude of them arose, 'they led, 'and carried him away.

Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned in that I have be- 45 trayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us ? thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and
