Matt. iv, 15-22. Mark i, 17-24. Luke iv, 31; v, 1—11; iv, 32, 33.

by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; the people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up.

1From that time Jesus taught them on the sabbath days, and 'began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 51 1And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

1And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two ships 10 standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. "And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

"Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out 15 into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the 20 other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had 25 taken. And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, 'follow me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. 1And 30 they straightway left their nets, they forsook their nets, they forsook all and followed him. And going on from thence, when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw other two brethren, James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship 1with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. Aud straightway he 35 called them: 'and they immediately left the ship and their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after, 1and followed him.

"And they went into Capernaum.

And straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, 40 and taught. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes, 'for his word was with power.

And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, 'which had a spirit of an unclean devil; and he cried out with a loud 45 voice, 'saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art,

Matt. viii, 14-17; iv, 23. Mark i, 24-39. Luke iv, 35-44.

"the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil, the unclean spirit, had thrown him in the midst, had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him, and hurt him not. And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned and spake among themselves, saying, 5 What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? what a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him, and they come out.

And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee. And the fame of him went out into every place 10 of the country round about.

And he arose out of the synagogue, and forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. But Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her; 15 and they besought him for her. And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he came, and he stood over her, 1and he touched her hand, 3and rebuked the fever, and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and immediately she arose and she ministered unto 20 them.

Now, 1when the even was come, when the sun was setting, at even, when the sun did set, 3all they that had any sick with divers diseases, brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils; and he laid his hands on every one of them, 25 and healed them, 'and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick. That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. And all the city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out 30 many devils. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them, '2suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him, for they knew that he was Christ.

And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went 35 out, 3and when it was day he departed and went into a desert, solitary place, and there prayed. And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee. And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. 40 And the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.

'And Jesus went about all Galilee, and he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils; 'teaching in their 45 synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

And

Matt. iv, 24, 25; v, 1–23. Luke iv, 44.

'he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

1And his fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. And there 5 followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judæa, and from beyond Jordan.

1And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him; and he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

'Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in 15 heart for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and 20 be exceeding glad for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of 25 the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

1Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets : I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called 35 the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

1Ÿe have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: but say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall 45 say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought

1against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto 5 thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

1Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: but I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in 10 his heart. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that 15 thy whole body should be cast into hell.

:

'It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: but I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced com- 20 mitteth adultery.

1Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: but I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by 25 Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

1Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a 30 tooth for a tooth: but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him 35 that would borrow of thee, turn not thou away.

1Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the 40 children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? 'Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Matt. vi, 1-25.

1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them : otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 5 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

'And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of 10 the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

'But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for 15 they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give 20 us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will 25 also forgive you: but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

1Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when 30 thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

1Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay 35 up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

'The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole 40 body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 'Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what 45 shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
