*Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judæa, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

*And, behold, men brought, 'they came unto him, bringing 3in a bed, 'one sick of the palsy, 'a man which was taken with a palsy, 5 "lying on a bed, ?which was borne of four: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. ?And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, sand when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and ’uncovered the roof where he was: and when 10 they had broken it up, they.let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay, 'and "let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. And when ?Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, 'Son, be of good cheer ; ?thy sins be forgiven thee, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

?But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? 'And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 'And the scribes and the „Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blas- 20 phemies ? Who can forgive sins but God alone ?

And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he knowing their thoughts, 'answering said unto them, "Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts ? What

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, '(then, he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up tky bed, 3thy couch, and go thy way into thine 30 house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up the :bed, that whereon he lay, ?and went forth before them all, and departed to his own house, glorifying God, insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion, -"When the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which 35 had given such power unto men. 3 And they were all amazed, and they

glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

*And after these things he went forth, and as Jesus passed forth from thence, ’he went ’again by the sea side : and all the multitude resorted 40 unto him, and he taught them. And as he passed by, he saw 'a man, a publican, 'named Matthew, 'Levi, ?the son of Alphæus sitting at the receipt of custom : 'and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

And it came to pass, that "Levi made him a great feast in his own 45 house : and there was a great company of publicans and of others, 'and it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold many publi

'cans and sinners came and sat down ?also together with Jesus and his disciples : for there were many, and they followed him.

? And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that 'your Master 2eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners ? Stheir scribes and 5 Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard that, he 3answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician ; but they that are sick : ?I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. "But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have 10 mercy, and not sacrifice : for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Then came to him the disciples of John, ’and the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, ? Why do we, the disciples of John, 'and the Pharisees fast 3often and 15 make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees ; but thy disciples fast not ? sthine eat and drink ? ?And Jesus said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, 'can the children of the bridechamber mourn, while the bridegroom is with them ? las long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But 20 the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

And he spake also a parable unto them ; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old ’garment; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth 25 not with the old 'garment, and the rent is made worse.

2 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles ; }else the new wine will burst the bottles, the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, ’and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred, 'and thie bottles perish : 'But new wine must be put into new bottles ; and both are preserved. No man also having drunk 30 old wine straightway desireth new : for he saith, The old is better.

3 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that lat that time Jesus 'went through the corn fields ?on the sabbath day ; land his disciples were an hungred, and began, 'as they went, to pluck the ears of corn, 'and to eat, 'rubbing them in their hands. But when 35 the Pharisees saw it, 'certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days ? ?and the Pharisees said unto him, 'Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do

upon the sabbath day, 'why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful ?

3 And Jesus answering, 'said unto them, Have ye never 40 read 3so much as this, what David did, 'when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him ? How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, ’and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him ; which it 'was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, 45 but only for the priests, ’alone ?' 'Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath,

and are blameless ? But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for 5 the sabbath : therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

And when he was departed thence, 'it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he went he entered ?again Sinto their synagogue, Band taught. And, behold, 'there was a man whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he 10 would heal on the sabbath day ; that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days ? that they might accuse him. Then said 15 Jesns unto them, I will ask you one thing ; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil ? to save life, or to destroy it? ?But they held their peace. 'And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much 20 then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. ?And when he had looked round about on them, Pupon them all, 'with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he did so, 'he stretched it forth, he stretched it out: and his hand was restored 25 whole, 'like as the other.

Then the Pharisees went out, $and they were filled with madness ; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus, ’and straighway took counsel with the Herodians against him, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. But when Jesus 30 knew it, he withdrew himself from thence, ?Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea : and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judæa, and from Jerusalem, and from Idumæa, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto 35 him, 'great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all.

2And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him. For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues.

40 ?And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known. That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Behold my servant, whom I have chosen ; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased : 45 I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his

voice in the streets. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

And it came to pass in those days, that he went out, and he goeth up into a mountain 'to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 5 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples, 'whom he would: and they came unto him: Sand of them he chose twelve, ’and he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils: 'whom also be named apostles; Simon, whom he also `surnamed 10 Peter, Rand Andrew his brother; 2and James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James ; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder : "Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphæus, ?and Thaddæus $Judas the brother of James, and Simon the Canaanite 3called Zelotes, -and Judas Iscariot 15which also was the traitor, ?which also betrayed him.

And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judæa and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases ; and they that 20were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch him : for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

'And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor : for yours is the kingdom of God." Blessed are ye that hunger 25 now : for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that

weep now : for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in 30 the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.

*But woe unto you that are rich ! for ye have received your consolation. Woe unto you that are full! for ye

shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for

ye
shall mourn and weep.

Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the 35 false prophets.

But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate yon, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other : and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid 40 not to take thy coat also.

8Give to every man that asketh of thee ; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

3Ănd as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which

therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven : give, and it shall be given unto you ; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, 10 and running over, shall men give ito your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

3And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind ? shall they not both fall into the ditch ?

The disciple is not above his master : but every one that is perfect 15 shall be as his master. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye,

but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye ? Either how canst thou say

to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 20 Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit ; neither doth a eorrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush 25 gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good ; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil : for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 30

Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock : and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it : for it was founded upon a rock.

But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a fourdation built an house upon the earth ; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the peo. ple, tre entered into Capernaum. And a certain centurion's servaut, 40 who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this : for he loveth our nation, and he hath built us 45 a synagogue.

Then Jesus went with them. And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, 'and when he was now not far from the house,
