Matt. xiii, 50-53; viii, 18-28. Mark iv, 35-41; v, 1-2. Luke viii, 22-27.

'into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

'Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure 5 things new and old.

'And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.

15

And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. 'Now when Jesus saw great inultitudes 10 about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side. And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead. And now it came to pass, when they had sent away the multitude, that he went into a ship with his disciples, 'and when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him, and they took him even as he was in the ship: and 20 he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And there were also with him other little ships. And they launched forth.

'But as they sailed he fell asleep and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and, 'behold, there arose a great storm of wind, 1a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the 25 waves, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full, and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy: 'but he was asleep, he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish, and they say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 3Mas- 30 ter, master, we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea, and the raging of the water, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

"And he said unto them, Where is your faith? why are ye so fear- 35 ful? how is it that ye have no faith? 'But the men marvelled, and they feared exceedingly, and they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him, 'even the winds and the sea obey him!

2And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes, and they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. 'And when he was come to the other side, and when he was come out of the ship, 3and when he went forth to land, 'into the country of the Gergesenes, immediately there met him, 45 'coming out of the tombs, out of the city a certain man, with an unclean spirit, 'which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither

'abode in any house, but who had his dwelling among the tombs, 'exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame 5 him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran, he cried out, and fell down before him, and worshipped him, and cried 1out with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? 1art thou come hither to 10 torment us before the time? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not, I beseech thee, torment me not. (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.-2For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.-3For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the 15 bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? and he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many, because many devils were entered into him. And they besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country, that he would not command them to go out 20 into the deep. And there was there, 1a good way off from them, 2nigh unto the mountains a great herd of many swine feeding on the mountain. And all the devils besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them, 'saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine, send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. 25 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave, and he suffered them, 1and he said unto them, Go.

"Then went the devils out of the man, and the unclean spirits went out, 1and when they were come out, they went and entered 1into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down 30 a steep place into the sea, into the lake, (they were about two thousand ;) and were choked in the sea, 1and perished in the waters.

3When they that fed them saw what was done, 'they that kept them, 2that fed the swine fled, 'went their ways into the city, and told it, in the city, and in the country, 1and told every thing, and what was 35 befallen to the possessed of the devils.

1And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus, and they went out to see what it was that was done; 3and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting at the feet of Jesus, 40 clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. They also which saw it, told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed, and also concerning the swine.

'Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round 45 about besought him, and they began to pray him to depart from them, 'out of their coasts; for they were taken with great fear: and he went

3up into the ship, and returned back again.

And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him, the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him. Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but 3sent him away, saying, Return to thine own house, go home 5 to thy friends, and shew and tell them, 'how great things the Lord 'God 2hath done for thee, hath done unto thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And he departed, and he went his way, and began to publish in Decapolis, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done for him, 3had done unto him: 'and all men did marvel. 10 1And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. "And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him, and it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him. And he was nigh unto the sea.

And, behold, 'while he spake, there cometh 'a certain ruler, one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell down at Jesus' feet, 1and worshipped him, 3and besought him greatly that he would come into his house: for he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying, 'saying, My 20 little daughter lieth at the point of death, 'my daughter is even now dead but come and lay thy hand upon her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. And Jesus arose, and followed him, and Jesus went with him, 'and so did his disciples, and much people followed him. "But as he went the people thronged him.

1And, behold, a 'certain woman 1which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, when she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, 'came 30 behind him, and touched the hem, 'the border of his garment: 'for she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway, immediately the fountain of her blood, 'her issue of blood stanched, was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. And Jesus, immediately knowing in him- 35 self that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the and press, said, Who touched my clothes? who touched me? When all denied, Peter and his disciples, and they that were with him said unto him, "Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And Jesus 40 said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. 2And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came, 'fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what 45 cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately, and told him all the truth. And when he saw her, he said unto her,

Matt. ix, 22-36. Mark v, 34-43. Luke viii, 48-56.

"Daughter, be of good comfort, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. 'And the woman was made whole from that hour.

3While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the 5 Master, why troublest thou the Master any further? As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not, be not afraid, only believe, and she shall be made whole. And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. And he cometh to the house of the 10 ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. 1And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, (3and all wept, 15 and bewailed her,) he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? he said, Weep not, 'give place: for the maid is not dead but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. And he put them all out, 'but when the people were put forth, when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, 20 and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, TALITHA CUMI; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And her spirit came again, and straightway the damsel arose, and walked ; for she was of the age of twelve years: and he commanded to give her 25 meat. And they, 3and her parents 'were astonished with a great astonishment. And he charged them straitly that no man should know it, that they should tell no man what was done; and commanded that something should be given her to eat. And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

1And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your 35 faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.

1As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake.

1And the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.

1And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every 45 sickness and every disease among the people.

'But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on

'them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

'Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

'After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

"Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting 10 for the moving of the water. For au angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

*And a certain man was there which had an infirmity thirty and eight 15 years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, 20 and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked and on the same day was the sabbath.

"The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and 25 walk. Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto 30 thee. The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus which had made him whole.

"And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

*But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. 35 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

"Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father 40 do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

"For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even 45 so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: that all men should
